So you saw the last show of the tour? (so far anyways) :edmetal:
I guess I did. It was a pretty good show, I was impressed. Axl actually didn't sound too bad for most of the night, he did deteriorate a little towards the end of the set. Setlist was amazing! All of the classics and some really deep cuts like "Dead Horse" and "Coma". "Madagascar" was a very nice touch during the encore.

I also forgot how good of a guitarist Slash is. Every solo he played was just absolutely perfect.

Very Jealous of Dead Horse and Madagasgar. Both times that I saw them Coma was amazing. Agreed Slash is amazing live

All great songs. I was really hoping to catch Locomotive but I'm quite satisfied with what I saw.
Locomotive would have been amazing, was very happy to see it was brought back. I’m surprised they are alternating patience and don’t cry again having both in the show was one of the highlights of the 2017 show I saw

A couple of concert reviews here.

The Saturday before last I saw Thrice and Refused co-headline in Birmingham at the same venue I saw Killswitch Engage a week earlier. I've been listening to Thrice since I was 13 or 14 and only got a chance to see them once before they took a hiatus so the last few years I've been making up for lost time and it was the fifth time I'd seen them. Much like Collin, I was on the barrier for the whole show, which I have managed every time I've seen Thrice.

The opening band, Gouge Away, were dull and pointless. I think they are supposed to be a Punk band but don't have any of the energy that I'd expect from a bunch of Punk Rockers. The singer didn't say anything to the crowd at all during their set, but she is quite attractive so they get some credit for that. Refused have a lot of energy and can incite some activity in the crowd. I was impressed by the singer's mic cable whirling skills - perhaps Janick Gers could learn a thing or two - and he visited the pit at one point too. Sadly their music kind of sucks and the singer's anti-capitalist rant made me laugh as the gig was in a venue sponsored/owned by a large telecoms company that is owned by another telecoms company and tickets were largely sold on Ticketmaster - an organization well known for not fleecing people. Thrice played well and I liked their setlist but everything seemed very low key from them. They walked on stage without an intro tape and there was very little decoration on the stage to show who was playing. The singer, Dustin, also barely spoke between songs or even looked at the audience much so it wasn't the most engaging performance. That said, I would like to reiterate that they did play well so it wasn't a bad performance, just a bit low key. After seeing them five times I've probably satisfied teenage me and seen Thrice enough now, so I doubt I'll make much effort to go see them again.

On Halloween last Thursday I saw Beyond the Black play in a small venue in London called The Dome, which was an upgrade from the smaller Boston Music Room. The support act was Mister Misery from Sweden and they put on a pretty good show, although their music sucks. Beyond the Black were a lot of fun. They're so Poppy they make Delain seem like Slayer, but their songs are really good live because of it. Their singer, Jennifer Haben, is really good live and sounds just like she does on the studio recordings. She's also really, really pretty which helps too. There was a nice amount of chatting to the crowd, such as the story about the song 'Spiderweb of Eyes' coming from a misunderstanding between singer and bassist when Jennifer mistook the bassist saying "ice" for "eyes" and the result was accidentally much more poetic. That was pretty funny. Their set did have a meandering, self-indulgent aspect as well. At one point the singer and one of the guitarists went to an extra mini-stage at the back of the venue to do an acoustic/keyboard section. That bit was OK but Jennifer decided to do a cover of some German song she'd done on a TV talent show instead of doing one of her own songs which I felt was a bit of a waste. There was also a drum solo, but if you're not Neil Peart or Mike Portnoy then why the hell are you doing a drum solo? Nicko McBrain doesn't do them, so why should some random Germany guy do them? Asides from these whinges, I enjoyed their show a lot and will hopefully get to see them again sometime soon.

Next up is Halestorm in Nottingham towards the end of the month.

Dead Horse from night 1

All great songs. I was really hoping to catch Locomotive but I'm quite satisfied with what I saw.

The most memorable songs from the gig I went to in 2017 is Coma, Estranged, Yesterdays, and My Michelle! Even if the tour has been going for so long I almost wish for another leg just to see Locomotive, Dead Horse etc. :edmetal:

I’ve only seen them on Youtube, but Jon Bon Jovi is in real trouble with his voice. Also on YT I saw Richie play in a Bar with Bonamassa, and he (Richie) was terrible. Let’s hope for the best, because I like the guys.

Likely closed out the 2019 concert season last night with Alestorm and support. This was my first trip to the Brass Monkey in Nepean as previous trips were cancelled due to illness or being out of town. It's a pool hall with a stage in a basement of a strip mall. Low ceilings and sticky floors, but there's places to sit if you want to sit to watch the show. The sound was not particularly great, but again, pool hall in the basement of a strip mall. It got incredibly hot during the set, I suspect you'd likely actually die if the show was in July.

Queuing to get into the venue was a pain. They had three different ticketing systems plus a bouncer checking IDs, and it was not cleanly arranged. As a result, although there was maybe only 50 people in line when I got in line, I did not get in until the first opener was 1/2 done. This band was The Aphelion, a prog metal band from Ottawa. They were decent, but they need to work on their charisma, I think. Still, I'll listen to their album sometime soon: https://theaphelionofficial.bandcamp.com/album/the-labour-division

Second up was Sovereign Council from Kingston, Ontario. I've seen them before at a local show and they were comparatively disappointing. They played several songs, including a couple I recognized from listening to their albums, but their lead male vocalist was no more. They played as a 6 piece previously (2 axe, bass, drum, 2x vocalist) and now they had their lead guitarist also singing. He was a step down from the previous singer, and as a result they assigned several of the male parts to the female lead. She actually really has pipes, so that wasn't bad. I believe their drummer was brand new, as he had a lot of trouble with time changes and even with rolling a beat sometimes. Otherwise, fine, but I had expected them to be better.

Aephanemer was next. I listened to their discography in the runup to the concert and I found myself really enjoying the music, but the vocals are that kind of brutal death growl that I find utterly disengaging. With this in mind, I set my earplugs to block out lower frequencies and was able to mostly not hear the growls. Band was pretty fun - female bassist in addition to the female lead singer/guitarist. A few weird drum things with this band too, but overall, it was fine. If you're into melodeath, you'd probably be all over this band.

Finally, Alestorm. They began inflating the duck immediately after Aephanemer finished. Regretfully, the duck was too big for the stage. The new duck is custom made and much larger than their previous duck - so big it actually impacted the ceiling of the stage and the venue owner asked them to stop once it started pressing on sprinklers and lights. I suppose it was a fire risk, and I definitely did not want to be in that basement if it lit on fire. They played their standard set for the last couple years, particular highlights were the songs Alestorm, Magnetic North, 1741 (Battle of Cartagena), and Mexico. 1741, in particular, is much better live than on the album. The band was their usual insane self and the gig was a ton of fun. Overall well worth the money and sweating my balls off in a tiny venue. Setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/alestorm/2019/the-brass-monkey-ottawa-on-canada-7b9d5ee0.html

There's a tiny chance I might go to an Iron Kingdom show in 2 weeks, but my current plans for that night would have to be cancelled. Otherwise, it looks like my 2019 has come to an end. And it was a heck of a year. Not only did I see Iron Maiden twice, I saw lots of bands for the first time: Kiss, Dream Theater, Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth, Lamb of God, Slayer, Tesla, Def Leppard, Demons & Wizards, Battle Beast, Kamelot, and HammerFall being the bands of note. I had my third Gloryhammer, Alestorm, and Sabaton shows, and my fourth Ghost concert. Hopefully 2020 has some fun stuff as well!

2020 I have made firm plans on a few dates, and I am also considering a few festivals (Heavy Montreal). Possibly a Maidenfans Meetup in Europe too!

Still five more to go for me. :nana:

I don't think anyone is supposed to engage with the vocals. I think people just mosh to that sort of Metal. Where do you get earplugs that do that though? I need to get myself some fancy shit like that instead of the cheap foam earplugs I've been using for years. I'm glad Aephanemer were fun though. Hopefully I'll get to see them sometime.

the duck was too big for the stage
It's fucking huge isn't it? Have you seen them put it on the crowd before?

Oh, yes. But they don't have that duck anymore. The new one is bigger. Their old supplier went out of business so they commissioned a custom 32 kg inflatable duck.

Since it doesn't look like I will be seeing another show before the end of the year I figured I will do my recap for the second half of 2019's concerts now and then can just do a show review if I see something else this year.

First Half Of 2019

Concert #8: Queen + Adam Lambert
This summers concert season kicked off with the opening night of Queen's Rhapsody tour. The band delivered an absolutely amazing setlist start to finish. I had seen them their previous time through and this time went with a friend who is a massive Queen fan and they were very impressed by Adam's performance. Highlights from the night included Hammer To Fall, Keep Yourself Alive, Who Wants To Live Forever, Show Must Go On. and Tie Your Mother Down. The setlist was incredibly eclectic spanning the catalog at large and very few songs were left out that one would expect at a Queen concert. The band came on stage to Innuendo which was super cool. Some set placements felt odd but they worked really well. A great show.

Concert #9: Slash Ft Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators
Easily the most fun concert I had been to at this point in the year. Slash's guitar wailed throughout the show. His soloing was absolutely memorizing. My Brother was at the show as well and he hadn't heard Myles sing before on he commented to me a few days later just how impressed he was by the talent he has. Having seen Myles on his solo tour I knew what to expect but wow can he deliver and amazing rocking performance. The extended Jams on Anastasia, World On Fire and Wicked Stone were all amazing, the band just pulls you in. Setlist was really strong only featuring one GNR song and it left me wanting a little bit more but this show skyrocketed right into my top 5 shows of all time. Nightrain was amazing.

Concert #10: Rock Ambleside Park - Blue Oyster Cult; Quiet Riot; David Wilcox; The Romantics
An afternoon festival along the ocean. The Romantics kicked off the afternoon and they delivered a rather enjoyable experience I'm not a huge fan of their music but they performed quite well I recognized the big hits and they were quite engaging. David Wilcox was someone who I will never have to see live again. Didn't know his stuff to begin with and didn't care to check him out afterwords I used this time to go get dinner. Quiet Riot were the easy highlight of the night band wise. Amazing energy and their lead singer delivered an incredible high energy performance throughout. The band was very much alive and having a great time interacting with the crowd. Cum On Feel The Noise was amazing live and frankly should have closed the show instead of Metal Health. Finally Blue Oyster Cult took the stage, the band came on late and there was a curfew so they did end up cutting a couple songs but those old guys can play. Not the most energetic setlist or upbeat but they played a really good set and sounded very good throughout. Burnin' for You, Godzilla were really good and Don't Fear The Reaper was quite the trip live, during the song I looked around and saw this guy with a cowbell just having the time of his life.

Concert #11: Weird Al Yankovic
Weird Al came through town with an orchestra, having never seen him but knowing that a 30 minute drive and a ticket is all that separated me from hearing the music I loved as a teen live for the first time made it a no-brainer. His comedic timing was amazing throughout the show incorporating the best drum solo I've heard. A triangle solo and playing songs on the tour which he hadn't played live before in conjunction with the orchestra. Another great show.

Concert #12 and #13: Iron Maiden
I had the privilege of seeing Maiden not once but twice on this past tour. Seeing them the first time was the only planned show and holy shit was it the greatest concert I'd ever seen. The theatrics, showmanship, talent and performance from Maiden are unparalleled by any band I've ever seen. Bruce is immense and sings better than many singers decades younger. Adrian, Janick and Dave delivered amazing solos and performances. Steve is a ball of energy on stage his bass thundering through the foundations of the arena and Nicko hammers away on his drums. The setlist as we have discussed to no end was amazing with some luls in crowd energy but still the songs were absolutely amazing. I left having a new found appreciation for some songs which I hadn't spent the time to get used to. Upon arriving home that evening I texted a friend about making the 3 hour trek to see Maiden at their next show before returning home that night due to class the next morning. Well round 2 was just as amazing as the first, I had a very different view on the second show sitting at the back of the arena looking straight upon the stage instead of from the upper bowl right along the stage so the backdrops were far more visible to me this round. Amazing show number two. The best two concerts I've been to.

Concert #14: Elton John
Elton was a real shift in pacing from Maiden but he delivered a phenomenal setlist for the night playing for nearly 3 hours he came on stage and began playing his voice was strong and conveyed the emotions that his music deserves. His piano skills are amazing and he came across as incredibly humble. Only real downside was the lack of Circle of Life or Can You Feel The Love Tonight, but when you have as many albums as Elton there is no way you can play everything everyone wants to hear in a 3 hour show.

Concert #15: Led Zepagain
The Zeppelin tribute band was another great experience. Playing many of the necessary Zeppelin tracks along with some really surprising deep cuts. The band performed a Medley for Whole Lotta Love to close out the night hitting several more tracks which they hadn't played in the main set. Stairway was great, as was Since I've Been Loving You. Personally would have preferred No Quarter over In The Light but it was a cool experience live as well.

Concert #16: The Who
Roger and Pete brought the band to town... with an orchestra. Starting off with a selection of songs from Tommy before going into some choices from the bands vast catalog including some newer tracks. The band delivered a great rendition of We're Not Gonna Take It. Who Are You made an early set appearance. After about 10 songs the orchestra took a break and the The Band performed 5 songs alone including a really impressive acoustic performance of Won't Get Fooled Again and a string accompanied performance of Behind Blue Eyes. The orchestra returned for another new track before launching into Quadrophenia tracks. Some absolutely amazing sounding tracks here such as The Real Me and 5:15. Eddie Vedder joined the band on stage for The Punk And The Godfather which is one of my favourite The Who tracks. The show closed off with an absolutely immense rendition of Love Reign O'er Me followed by Baba O Reilly. Throughout the night Roger and Pete did their trademark windmills with the guitar and microphone. Pete's crowd banter was super entertaining, dry and sarcastic he really was quite engaging.
