Dont know why but Im expecting 'The Red and The Black' to be the repetitive one thats gonna annoy me this time round. Got nothing to base that on, maybe cos its Steve writing by himself or maybe its cos the title reminds me of 'The Angel & The Gambler', but for some reason Ive already taken an irrational dislike to that song!
Irrational is the word.

"The Legacy" has the band come in around 3:10, so it's been done before. Until we hear it, we don't know if it will feel like 30 sec or 20 minutes.

Oh, the Legacy! but this intro is so wonderful. Layered/multiple guitars, really nice melodies, no real comparison to WTWWB. Yes, of course we need to heat it first. But since we haven't really heard anything yet we can only speculate. :)

You are right Doc. But he introduced something equally or even more disturbing - if you ask me - which is A 3:3o min long intro with chords underneath the vocal melody that is in turn doubled by the guitar.

I guess it would be fine for a bit but not for the full 3:30 minutes. There was a time here Maiden songs were about that long you know. Still pretty cool middle section to that song.
Why do you call this part an intro ? The song has a proper intro. And you tend to mistake repetiton and variation upon a them. This part is NOT a repetition.

Well, being an intro or not, I tend to think it is very boring! It is the pattern of guitar-follows-guitar-over single chords that might as well drive me crazy.

Speed of Light is not a grower for me. It's a weak song that came out as the first single, a la Wildest Dreams. I hope, and think, that it ends up as the worst track on the album. Only parts I truly enjoy involve the 30 second preview melody. I immensely dislike the chorus. Pretty forgettable song in general.

Well I like it. I do think it will be among the lesser songs on the album. Maybe 1 to many chorus repeats , and an over dramatic outro. Oh and an unnesseserily cowbell! :D. It is feeling like wildest dreams/el dorado all over again to me. Weaker single and way better over all album to come!!!:dancinggeek:

I really wish I had the superpower where I could judge songs before I heard them, based on the opinion of some guy. It's pretty impressive.

I don't have the impression that Speed of Light is going to crack my top 10, but it's a perfectly fine song that does what it sets out to do. It introduces me to what we can presume most of The Book of Souls will sound like, and reminds me that Iron Maiden still rocks hard.

Some songs just work better in the context of an album too. I think I'll like SoL way more than most of you guys when the album comes, since I've only heard it once so far and won't get sick of it :D

Run to the Hills, Icarus, Two Minutes, Can I Play, Bring Your Daughter, Here to Eternity...even in the PlayClassics era, the singles are not among this board's favourites — the obvious exception being Wasted Years.

BQOBD... Which era is that? I think it's the most underrated single of all. And guess what the rest of the album sounds like!

Exactly. The straight forward songs that are weaker always end up being the first songs we hear as singles and have never represented the rest of the album and the much better songs on it.
