SMX presents The Top 100 Classic Rock Songs

#87. Elton John, "Tiny Dancer"
Here's another song that I suspect has been boosted by (relatively) recent popularity - specifically, the bus scene in Almost Famous. By what I've heard, the airplay for "Tiny Dancer" went up astronomically after that movie came out, and hasn't gone down much since. I was never a huge fan of this song, but the video linked above is a superb performance; John's strength was always his live performances, and this does not disappoint. Now if only classic rock radio gave more airtime to "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding", which is beyond amazing but didn't make the countdown.
Amazing song, and the assessment I think is spot on. I'm one of those people who was introduced to this song by Almost Famous and it's constantly been one of my favorite tune. It's actually my favorite Elton John song (although I'm not a big fan so take that with a grain of salt). It has such a great melody and an easy flow that makes it very memorable and fun to sing along to.

Coming in the next installment...
I'll be guessing again:

A solo Beatle. >>> So many to choose from! Random guess: Lennon. Mind Games.

A song that radio stations play when it rains. >>> Have You Ever Seen the Rain? by CCR

A cover song, where most people have never heard the original. >>> All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix (much lesser-known original by Bob Dylan)

One of the elements. >>> Fire? Hendrix again?

That song with the bizarre spoken bit at the end. >>> omg I have no idea... I'm thinking of a Beatles song but I can't remember which one...

A solo Beatle. - Imagine maybe?

A cover song, where most people have never heard the original - Definitely All Along The Watchtower.

One of the elements - I agree with vala on this one.

The rest I have no idea.

^ I hope not :( That would be too low (for me).

I thought of this as well but I would imagine :)D) that this song should be much higher in SMX's countdown.

Maybe Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"? Macca's "Silly Love Songs"? I could be anything. I'm at a total loss. :p

Oh, I haven't thought of that...

Or maybe it's Jealous Guy? Nice tune.  :yey:

Unless we're stuck in the 13th century then Fire isn't an element :p I'd guess Lithium by Nirvana or something.

In the classical sense, fire is one of the four (sometimes five) elements: Earth, wind, water, fire (and space). You are talking about chemical elements.

A song that radio stations play when it rains - Sultans Of Swing? (not sure about this, since they play it all the time.) :D

A cover song, where nobody heard the original - maybe "All Along The Watchtower", maybe "Hallelujah"

A solo Beatle...
#85. Paul McCartney, "Maybe I'm Amazed"
I've never been a McCartney guy; I'm more of a Lennon fan. First because Lennon was right, McCartney does specialize in silly love songs. Also because I'm a bassist named Paul, and I've endured far too many walrus-related jokes. But on this song, McCartney reached his peak. It's one of those songs that feels epic, without the epic length. That rising scale from the piano left hand gets me every time. So simple, yet a brilliant transition. (You can find a similar fine example on the Aerosmith song "You See Me Crying".)

A song that radio stations play when it rains...
#84. The Doors, "Riders On The Storm"
If I'd read my clue without knowing the answer, I would have guessed REO's "Ridin' The Storm Out". A good Doors song, though not especially a favorite of mine. At its heart, this song is just a blues jam, but it's got some nifty keyboard lines. That descending scale sets the tone for the song.

A cover song, where most people have never heard the original...
#83. Eric Clapton, "Cocaine"
Original by JJ Cale. One of the first songs I ever played with a band. This live video has Mark Knopfler on guitar and Elton John on keys. It couldn't be simpler musically: D to C and back, throw in B-flat and A before "cocaine". That means you got to jam it. It's all about the groove. The video has a great keyboard jam at the end of the song.

One of the elements...
#82. Jimi Hendrix, "Fire"
If Jimi looks at all distracted in parts of this performance (Woodstock), it may be because he was reputedly tripping balls at the time. With LSD in his headband, so it would run into his eyes with his sweat. (From what I've heard, the eye is the fastest intake method; the acid hits your brain in seconds.) This is another garage band standard. I've never met a musician who didn't know how to play "Fire". (There are actually a few more Hendrix songs that fit that description, like "Hey Joe" back at #89.)

That song with the bizarre spoken bit at the end...
#81. The Moody Blues, "Knights In White Satin"
A subpar song made memorable by haunting production. 5:54 is the creepiest thing I've ever heard on a radio station. I've always avoided the Moody Blues ever since hearing that. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. But I know some oddballs swear this is a great band. You be the judge.

Vala gets +5 karma for guessing Fire. The rest of you Einsteins better find yer thinkin' caps. :p

Next time:
Everything has one.
Vampiric warning.
Azure optic nerves.
In unsettled land.
May I have your attention please?

I'm really enjoying the list!

Hmm. I've heard the original lots of times, but I can barely recall the Clapton version.

May I have your attention please?

One song comes to mind, but it's certainly not included in this list...

Oh dear.

Here are my guesses:

Everything has one. -- The End, by the Doors
Vampiric warning. -- Here Comes the Sun, by the Beatles*
Azure optic nerves. -- Behind Blue Eyes, by The Who (tsk, tsk, Wasted...)
In unsettled land. -- Baba O' Riley, by The Who ("Teenage Wasteland" -- though Thunder's Zep guess is a good one)
May I have your attention please? -- Sympathy for the Devil, by the Rolling Stones ("please allow me to introduce myself") -- other possibilities are Maggie May by Rod Stewart ("wake up, Maggie, I think I got something to say to you") and Can't You Hear Me Knocking? also by the Stones

* - EDIT:  I originally guessed "Don't Fear the Reaper" before realizing it was already on SMX's list.  I like my current guess better, though.

This is fun.
