Words of wisdom - yes, the clue really was that obvious. (+5 to Mega)
#40. The Beatles, "Let It Be"
Billy Preston visited the Beatles while they were recording this album, and wound up being one of the few rock musicians to guest on a Beatles record. He plays organ on this song and on "Get Back". Their friendship with Preston would last beyond the breakup; at one point, there was talk of a post-Beatles band with Lennon, Harrison, Starr, Preston and Klaus Voorman on bass. (Voorman was an old friend from the Hamburg days, and designed the Revolver cover.) They were going to call themselves The Ladders, and a press release about it was put out by Apple - only to be immediately recanted as they changed their minds. The Ladders would have been the Beatles, with McCartney replaced and Preston added. If only it had happened...

#39. Guns N Roses, "Sweet Child O' Mine"
The classic guitar intro started as a joke, based on a string-skipping exercise Slash was working on. Axl heard it and insisted there was a song there. They decided to add a long solo at the end, but didn't know how to end the song. They literally said "where do we go now?" and producer Mike Clink said, "yeah, just sing that".
One of the bare necessities... (+5 to cornfedhick)
#38. The Rolling Stones, "Gimme Shelter"
Sorry, I don't know any fun anecdotes about this song. But if you want to play it on guitar, it's in C-sharp minor.
A question... (+5 to Unknown One)
#37. The Who, "Who Are You"
This was from the last album with Keith Moon. An eerie coincidence: on the album cover, Moon is sitting on a chair that is marked "not to be taken away". This is another song where I suspect recent popularity (CSI theme song) raised this song up in the rankings.
Something from the dream-killing thread... (+5 to cornfedhick)
#36. Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here"
One of the most beautiful elegies in rock history - and the subject wasn't even dead yet!
It appears cfh has a challenger. Can Mega or anyone else break the hick's dominance?
