I fully support the cell phone ban with the caveat that I think it's impossible to enforce.
If you take your phone out in a movie theater, on stage musical, religious ceremony, etc, they ask you to put it away or leave. I don't think it's that out of line to do the same at rock concerts. It also wasn't that long ago when we weren't connected to the internet at all hours and going to a concert meant leaving the outside world behind for a few hours. It's not a big deal imo.
On the bootlegging point. The history of bootleggers recording concerts is also the story of discretely violating concert restrictions to get a good recording. The microphones, camcorders, and other devices used by bootleggers pre-cellphone era were also banned from concert venues but had to be snuck in and used without getting caught. And then, once inside, they had to again record in a discrete manner so as not to get caught.
The folks who are making high quality bootlegs to put on YouTube are not the idiots in the pit holding their phone up the entire concert so that people behind them can watch through a screen - they're often sitting further in the back and are filming in a much more non disruptive manner not trying to draw attention to themselves.
