The entire solo section of Paschendale still brings a reat to my eye every time I hear it. It's incredible, this song has one of the best build ups in the history of music, with SSoaSS behind it, and Rime behind that. The solos may be Maiden's all time best.

Hallowed is a classic, but the fact that some lyrics were lifted from Beckett, and the solos which aren't that great (sorry), bring it down for me. I still love it, but it has become really hard to ignore it's faults.

Rime is fantastic, but I always felt that the long middle part (you know what part it is) is a bit too long. Also, the solos could be a bit better, although they are great. I'm looking for those high notes in a solo, they are the most emotional.

Starblind is brilliant, but not as good as the previous three songs. I'll vote for PFD for now, but this may change.

For me, I find Paschendale to be a complete triumph; the music, the planning, the lyric, the emotion.

This is it in a nutshell, kiddies. I've posted on a different thread how I will go as far to say that I consider Paschendale to be the finest rock n roll song ever recorded. Period. Just personal preference to be sure, but it's really as simple as this: Iron Maiden is the finest rock n roll band on the planet. Iron Maiden's most powerful, most moving, best orchestrated (etc. etc.) piece of music is PFD. Therefore, it is the finest rock n roll song ever. Good logic...

Heres the order I think these go in:
Hallowed
Starblind
Rime
Paschendale

I don't really want to explain why, but I will if anyone wants to know.

I'm really enjoying reading the descriptions in this thread, especially LC's :)
I love all these 4 besides perhaps Starblind, which I still find a good song, but I find it in no way comparable to these 3. Would anyone who loves the song be able to enlighten me as to why it is so good? :)

Starblind is an immense piece of work; as Paschendale is to Hallowed for the Reunion Era of Maiden, so Starblind is to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It's a melodic piece of work written by H, who has again descended from on High to deliver His Holy riff work and brilliant song writing, and features the single most involved, interesting, and beautifully written lyric Maiden's ever presented. Ever.

Listening to H play and tease along his guitar in the background while Jan and Davey play melodius rhythms is a simple pleasure. Nicko is a beast on this track, and seems to pound out the power from behind, and the lack of powerful guitar gives us a great chance to concentrate on a less involved, but still strong bass line. Bruce is at his best on the track, as he always seems to be when he sings his own lyric, and each note that comes out of his mouth drips with emotion and belief in his own words.

And then there's the subject matter itself, which is something we've never seen Maiden tackle; indeed, it serves as a 180-degree turn from similar songs on the subject. That Maiden can present songs like For the Greater Good of God, New Frontier, and Starblind in successive albums shows that the band has indeed begun to work together on more than just playing music, but have learned to agree to disagree: a missing skill that led to the band's near-breakup in the early 1990s. Starblind is a crowning achievement. It takes a few listens to sink in, but when it hits, it hits with a hammer.

Thanks for that, I've definitely noticed it growing on me. I'll definitely have to listen to it more often. TBH, I haven't really listened to TFF that much, I guess because I've only been a Maiden fan for about 2 years and a lot of their stuff is still fresh to me. My most played album is probably AMOLAD :)

I listened to Paschendale, this morning, and it's just mind blowing, perfectly tied musically, lyrically with its atmosphere; it's a song that lives, breaths, cries, claims, screams and tells you those horrible tales of wwI as if it was a channeling from outer eras/world through the music. A masterpiece. I think I'm now seeing why some people here compare this and Starblind with 80's epics, like Hallowed and Rime.

I listened to Rime, this morning, and it's just mind blowing, perfectly tied musically, lyrically with its atmosphere; it's a song that lives, breaths, cries, claims, screams and tells you those horrible tales of the mariner as if it was a channeling from outer eras/world through the music. A masterpiece.

:)

I'll sue you for ripping me off, you lazy mind. :D :P

Even though Paschendale and Starblind can be put on the same league as Hallowed, Rime, Seventh Son, Alexander The Great, Phantom, To Tame A Land, the previous epics still are a lot ahead of any of the 90's/00's/10's epic(s) and, for me, The Edge Of Darkness, Sign Of The Cross, Dream Of Mirrors can also be in this same league.

I listened to Hallowed, this morning, and it's just mind blowing, perfectly tied musically, lyrically with its atmosphere; it's a song that lives, breaths, cries, claims, screams and tells you those horrible tales of a man on a death row as if it was a channeling from outer eras/world through the music. A masterpiece.  :P

LOL at Foro's post count. :)

Calling my lawyers, right now!!! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... :D

Now, I noticed that I pretty much summed up, basically, all of Maiden's music. :edmetal:

Bwhahahaha, that's strange because all of my life, I have believed that Judgement of Heaven is waiting for me.  :D

A fiery fight between Rime & Hallowed. Both are awesome though.  :edmetal:

I used the same logic to prove Dio as Power Metal but I'm not gonna start that one again. On topic, I picked Paschendale cause it doesn't have an immensely boring middle section (hello Rime!) It has original lyrics (cough hallowed cough) And it just blows Starblind out of the water (which is a very good song. My second favorite on the Final Frontier.
I don't get why so many people think of Hallowed as maiden's best song. I became a fan in 2003, so as far as nostalgia goes, I find Hallowed just as nostalgic as Paschendale. So is it the fact that it is one of the first maiden epics? Or it was on such an immense album? Cos all the riffs and vocal parts all have the same basis where other epics like SSOASS, have so much going on and don't have any moments of boredom. Anyone want to fill me in on this one?

It beats Rime because it doesn't have a boring middle section and it beats Paschendale because it doesn't repeat itself for 8 minutes.
