It's a bit like going back to 1984 and saying, before the release of the Powerslave album, that 'Flash Of The Blade' is most probably about the Cossacks because the previous album had 'The Trooper' on it, a song about the Crimean War.
Hmmm...perhaps, but 'Flash of the Blade' is a bit vague-here we
know that there is a book and film called 'The Longest Day', and look at the number of a) War songs maiden have released:
1. Invaders
2. The Mercenary
3. Out of the Silent Planet (aftermath of war?)
4. Montsegur [r]
5. Paschendale [r]
6. Face in the Sand (war on terror) [r]
7. Afraid to Shoot Strangers [r]
8. Aces High [r] [f]
9. 2 Minutes to Midnight (Nuclear war)
10. Tailgunner [r]
11. Run Silent, Run Deep [r] [f]
12. Run to the Hills [r]
13. The Trooper [r]
14. Back in the Village
15. Alexander the Great (hell, any biopic of him had to include his Asian wars

) [r]
16. The Clansman [r]
17. Como Estais Amigo [r]
18. Fortunes of War
19. The Aftermath
20. The Edge of Darkness [ b ] [f]
21. Where Eagles Dare [f] [ b ]
21 songs connected with war in some way (I may have missed some); those marked [r] have a clear-cut reference to a real event in history (in the case of Tailgunner, it has real place names of targets during WWII). Those marked [ b ] or [f] are based on a book or a film, which is what 'The Longest Day' will be if it
is about D-Day. As we can see, the only song not based on a well-known book that features the same title is 'Out of the Silent Planet'. On the other hand, if what Steve says about religion-based songs on this album is true, then it could be something entirely different, about the crusades or some other historical event. Or it could be a hypothetical situation,
a la '2 Minutes...'
EDIT: Reminded Computer that a b in square brackets does not necessarily mean I want everything in bold, and if I
do, I will tell the computer to do that, thank it very much.
Also remembered that Where Eagles Dare is an adaptation as well...
