Meanwhile, the IIHF World Championship has reached the final game and with 13 minutes remaining ... it's still a real possibility that Switzerland can win it! After eliminating Finland (!) and Canada (!!!) they now have 2-2 against Sweden ...

The match goes to overtime! The Swiss goalkeeper has been outstanding.

That is pretty cool, but to be honest, not really interested in the awards this year. Much more interested on the off-season moves. The most interesting one being Daryl Suter not interested in coaching anymore after Trotz did not renew with the Caps and is now with the Islanders. I wonder if that will influence Tavares' decision to stay or leave. What will Vegas do with all the pending contracts to renew? How many will stay how many will leave. A lot of exciting stuff going on.

I was interested in the Hart race for the first time in a long time. Trotz going to the Islanders is interesting - they must have opened their pocketbooks, because he was upset about cash with the Caps. Still curious to see where Tavares ends up - I will be legit sad if he just resigns with the Islanders.

I agree. Though I think firing Garth Snow was the best thing they could do. Never did understand how his tenure lasted so long.

More than Snow, I think Charles Wang's tenure as majority owner was the most damaging thing to the franchise. He was a VERY hands-on owner and he was solely responsible for some of the WORST deals both in management and personnel for the club. Loui Loui should right the ship and with Trotz as coach I think Tavares will most likely stay.

Quite the draft. BUF has their stud defenseman now, but can they get a goalie to match? Are they finally going to turn the corner? Stay tuned!

A LOT of defensemen, holy cow.

Tavares will be talking to at least 5 teams. The plot thickens.

It really comes down to who can fit him under the cap, pay him the $10M-12M/year he seems to want for the number of years he wants, and still field a team he would want to play for (with a chance to win) ... honestly at this point, I think that team is probably the Islanders. But who knows, maybe someone else can dump a salary to make it work.

Edit: Forgot about Vegas ... that would be interesting

It's been a very long time since a star as massive as John Tavares hit the open market during his prime. Stamkos, a few years ago, came close, but of course he resigned with Tampa. I feel like the last huge free agent signing we saw was Kovalchuk going to Jersey.

Martin Brodeur, Martin St. Louis, Willie O'Ree, and Gary Bettman going into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Also going: Alexander Yakushev of the Soviet 1970s team, and women's Team Canada stalwart Jayna Hefford.

I saw Willie O'Ree play a few time for the San Diego Gulls (WHL). Cool to see him get in. Brodeur seems like a no brainer. Bettman has done a good job financially stabilizing and expanding the sport.

Speaking of Kovalchuk, dude has some balls coming back. I'd be VERY nervous if I were L.A/L.A fans. He is NOT the player he was 5 years ago and then there is the fact he wiped his ass with one of the largest, most lucrative contracts EVER. Who the fuck signs for 15 YEARS at 100 MILLION DOLLARS, then only plays 3 years and QUITS. Oh, sorry I mean "retires." Spends five years in Russia and wants to "come back" to the NHL at 35? Seriously!? Your contract had you playing until you were 42! Back when you were a point per game player! Who are you now? An old, professionally unreliable, prima donna. Fuck you Kovalchuk!

BUT I'M NOT BITTER!

I forgot to mention his contract was front loaded, in other words, he played the most lucrative years, before bouncing. OOOOH, ok, ok, ok. I'm done. Otherwise I'm going to break something. !#$%$%&*$#

For LA though, the cap hit is still $6.25M each of the 3 years ... the Hawks have a similar deal with Hossa, his cap hit is $5.somethingM a year, but they are only actually paying him $1M/year in actual cash now .. though with him, the hit is negated by him going on LTIR ... real shame what happened to him .. and very odd.

True, I believe Arizona bought the remainder of Kovalchuk's contract to remain cap compliant (as they were too low). So his new contract has nothing to do with the one he rescinded. Will be interesting for sure.

Yeah, I think that is what the Hawks are trying to do with Hossa's contract. Trade the cap hit for compliance with only having to pay $1M/year the cap floor did go up this year .. and free up the cap space and some of the limitations around LTIR versus just not having the contract to start with.

John Tavares just signed the largest free agent contact of the current CBA, taking him to Toronto for 7 years at $11 million per year.
