It was cool seeing Timonen with the cup ... he did not play all that well this year .. not from lack of effort, just to get back on the ice is amazing. He had a great career and it was cool seeing him go out this way and it was cool of Toews to hand the cup to him first and tell him to skate it around.

The old farts go first, that's the rule. Timonen had a good career and I kinda felt Chicago went and picked him up out of pity. I wouldn't be shocked if part of the reason was to give the team a second reason. While I do not doubt the drive of players like Toews and Hossa and Kane, I didn't doubt the drive of Sakic and Forsberg and Roy. Yet you cannot argue that do it for Ray wasn't part of the 2001 Colorado win - and maybe get one for Kimmo helped a bit for the Hawks.

Either way, they traded for Timonen and they won the Cup. Stan Bowman proves he is the new master of hockey.

I don't think they picked him up out of pity their back end beyond the top 4 was sketchy all year (at points the top 3 when Oduya was hurt/not playing well) .. Rozsival finally started playing well to give them 5 D-men and he broke is ankle.

I get the old farts go first rule, but when Timonen was about to hand it off to Vermette (a great pickup), Toews told Timonen to skate it around a bit more.

I do think Timonen helped Tervainen pick up his game (looked it up, Teuvo is 9 months younger than my son .. wow!) being fellow Finns ... it seems like Timonen made a real effort to take him under his wing and Teuvo really seemed top play with confidence. He is going to be scary good.

A few guys will be gone for sure after this win (due to the cap) .. Sharp, Versteeg, and Bickell seem like the top candidates so they can re-sign Saad (and hopefully Kruger) and sign a vet D-man on the cheap

But, with guys like Saad, Teuvo, the Russian winger the signed and a ton of blue line prospects in Rockford they should be able to reload pretty quickly

I suppose that outside of Canada, this is not the norm!

Not at all, but that seems to be changing in Chicago. The Trib had an article about this the other day

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...americans-spt-0612-20150611-story.html#page=1

But statistics and black hockey fans in Chicago say that's changing.

African-American fans have the highest growth rate among NHL fans at 1.4 times the overall rate, according to Scarborough, a national media research company.
In Chicago, the number of African-Americans who identify themselves as very or somewhat interested in the Hawks increased from 12.6 percent in 2011 to 21.9 percent in 2014.

The number of black fans who watched a Hawks game on TV or listened on the radio grew from 28.1 percent in 2011 to 37.9 percent last year.

They made up 9.7 percent of Hawks fans in 2014, up from 7.1 percent in 2011, which is the only increase among racial groups charted by Scarborough.

The numbers are far less than the 49.9 percent of African-Americans who identify as NBA fans or even the 40.9 percent of white fans who identify as hockey fans, but it doesn't diminish the significance of the growth.

Also can we have him in Montreal?

It will be sad to see Sharp leave, but it is really keep him or Saad ... and you have to keep Saad, really good player and only 22 years old. I can see him having a similar career to Hossa, he plays a similar game.

Speaking of Hossa, holy crap did he turn it on this year in the playoffs. Great 2-way player .. incredible how well he still plays at his age given the number of games the Hawks play every year.

I am thinking of putting together a list of players the Hawks have jettisoned and prospects that opted out (like Hayes) since the 2010 Cup because they did not see a shot at a top 6 spot on the team. I think those players could form a playoff team (especially if you put them in the Eastern Conference).

3 on 3 for OT skating. I think I liked ties better

Looks like Quebec, Seattle, and Vegas are all in the running for expansion .. I would guess the one that gets left out has a shot at Phoenix

I am surprised Cleveland and KC do not make a bigger push for a team .. Houston too for that matter.

Expanded review and a coaches challenge are in (both good I think)

This one, I really dislike

When the face-off takes place at any of the nine face-off spots, the players taking part shall take their position so that they will stand squarely facing their opponent's end of the rink, and clear of the ice markings (where applicable). The sticks of both players facing-off shall have the blade on the ice, within the designated white area. At the eight face-off spots (excluding center ice face-off spot), the defending player shall place his stick within the designated white area first followed immediately by the attacking player. When the face-off is conducted at the center ice face-off spot, the visiting player shall place his stick on the ice first.

#CBJ acquire Brandon Saad and two prospects from #Blackhawks for Anisimov, Dano, Morin, Troop and a 4th rd pick in 2016

Real surprising, they must have been nowhere near a deal. I guess they can resign Kruger for sure and maybe Sharp stays if they can trade Bickell and Versteeg

or ... maybe not, depending on what these guys are making. But Dano and Anismov are a good return

Sounds like they were protecting themselves from an offer sheet they would not have been able to match.
Bickell and Sharp will be gone before training camp. Anisimov and Dano are their replacements.
Saad will be harder to replace.

And what a week for NHL news: goalies moving everywhere, the Bruins demolition, the Mike Richards situation, trades everywhere and enter McDavid and Eichel.
Eichel, O'Reilly and Kane are going to make my Sabres relevant again.

That's a huge switch. And I bet Saad was going to get an offer sheet. Stan Bowman showing his genius, one of the best GMs ever.

I hate Mike Richards. So yeah, I'm cool with that. Should help the Kings, a team I am very fond of these days.

The Bruins exploded. Which should also help the Kings, a team I am very fond of these days. It also gets Lucic away from me, and I hate that bastard.

NHL is reporting that Ansimov will sign for 5 years with the Hawks at 4.55m, very reasonable.

Kevin Bieksa is now a Duck for a 2nd round pick. Shall we start calling them the Anaheim Canucks yet?

Semin being bought out in Carolina. When Carolina doesn't like you, it's time to go to the fucking KHL.

Tarasenko is going RFA, seems to be looking for a sheet. Worth taking a risk on?

Anaheim is well on its way to dressing 20 total douche bags a night

Hawks signed Anisimov to a 5 year deal. They won last year, in part, because they had good depth up the middle (Richards, Vermette), which killed them 2 years ago (Handzus, Shaw).

Dano can start off as a 3rd line center, Shaw and Teravainnen can stay on the wings.

Add in the KHL winger they have coming in might benefit with a fellow Russian on the team.

Hawks still have a lot of work to do and need to improve the blue line.

But, I think Bowman did the best he could with the cap and they should be in the hunt next year, it is tough loosing Saad though. Good player and only 22

The Blackhawks have signed forward Viktor Tikhonov to a one-year deal, according to reports.

Tikhonov, 27, has spent the past four seasons in the KHL in Russia, where he recorded 24 points in 49 games last season for SKA St. Petersburg. He was originally drafted by the Coyotes late in the first round of the 2008 draft.

His deal with Chicago is reportedly worth just more than $1 million.

Tikhonov is the grandson of former Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov.

No Russians to 3 pretty quickly :)

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Leafs will receive forwards Nick Spaling and Kasperi Kapanen, defenceman Scott Harrington and a first and third-round draft picks (2016) in exchange for Kessel, forward Tyler Biggs, defenceman Tim Erixon and a second-round pick (2016). McKenzie also says the Leafs will retain 15 per cent of Kessel's salary.

Marty St. Louis retired. He had a good regular season, but disappeared in the playoffs. Nice to see him know his time is up and move on.

1st ballot Hall of Famer for sure. Hell of a career. Never quite got over not being named to the 2014 Olympic team, though, which is unfortunate. A giant for 15 years at 5'9". The game is lesser without him.

2x Art Ross Trophies, a Hart, a Lindsay, and three Lady Byngs. Including an Art Ross at age 37, the oldest such winner ever.

Finally got around to 30 for 30: Of Miracles and Men last night. What a great documentary. There was a similar one called Red Army, going to try to get to that soon.
