Official Football Thread

I watched the Serbia - Denmark game with the theory that it was do or die for Serbia so it should be a good game, whereas England would probably beat Slovenia handily enough. Turns out it was a shit game and I feel asleep.

Tonight it's all or nothing for Belgium. I hope there will be more efficiency which should result in more goals but I guess Ukraine won´t give it away so easily. We might get kicked out too, in this tournament everything´s possible!

Very little action in this thread for the last week.

For the England fans: If Three Lions fail to win this year, the years of hurt will have been doubled from the 1996 original of a certain song ...

Okay. Norway-Italy 3-0? What did I see? Can I believe, that what I saw tonight was real and not just fantasy?
It's incredible how football has changed and how some traditional teams have failed to adapt to the modern game. Italy is the best example, but our Brazilian team here also fails to combine its traditional identity with the tactical demands of the new times. I hope that Carlo Ancelotti, our first foreign coach in history, will be able to do this until next year's World Cup.

Another huge win for Norway, albeit against one of the weaker teams in Europe. If it comes down to goal difference between us and Italy, this sure helps.

I can't help but think that the one time the Norwegian men's team did really well in an international tournament was the 1936 Olympics ... in Berlin. In the quarter final we beat the hosts 2-0 with a fuhrious Hitler in the stands. Maybe the stars are lining up again, 90 years later?

Sweden ain't making it to the World Cup, that's for sure - despite pretty strong player material in the offense we're completely handicapped by a nitwit Danish coach. In all other countries Jon Dahl Tomasson would have been fired immediately after this kind of fiasco, but he will remain.

Why? 1) No one wants the job coaching the national team (no money for anyone remotely competent), 2) We don't fire coaches for the national team, no matter results.

Fifa ranking says #29, so we should make it to a 48 team tournament with margin to spare if there was any truth to those numbers, right?

You might, since we (Slovenia) are utter shite at the moment. Switzerland will walk our group, but then, for the 2nd spot, I'd say you are the favourites, however, anything could happen.

Counterpointing 2) I will say I think not qualifying for the Euro 2024 cup was the straw that broke the back for previous coach Janne Andersson. Not to mention that Sweden also missed the 2022 World Cup.

I will also add 3) by saying that JDT still is new on his job compared to past tenures. I might also add 4) by saying that his domestic successes with Malmö FF also would play a role in the faith of his potential.
