Norwegian terror attacks

Re: Oslo Bombing

So an Al Jazeera live blog summarises what is known about this:

Oslo police officials say two people have been confirmed dead and 15 others injured in a powerful bomb blast at the prime minister's office.

Police told reporters the explosion on Friday was caused by a "one or more" bombs. They declined to speculate on who was behind the blast.

Asked if the blast was caused by a car bomb, Oslo police chief Anstein Gjengdal said: "It is possible that a vehicle has been used in this incident, but we can't confirm this."

He said that police have sealed off the office of Norwegian broadcaster TV2 to investigate a suspicious package there.

A Norwegian government official also was quoted as saying that people remain trapped in some buildings hit by the bomb blast.
I found two English live blogs:

Al Jazeera
The Guardian

I understand that, but if I remember correctly, some Muslim countries demanded that UN impose sanction on Dennmark when the carricatures first showed up. It is overreacting. Newspapers are to blame, not the whole country.

Like I said before, I absolutely do not support that kind of events, that's total nonsense. Like LC said "Right to freedom of speech trumps the inconvenience of offense." My statement was just to clear up some point (why do they do these attacks) not defending the attack itself.

Re: Oslo Bombing

I'm trying to get into the Aftenposten website too, I think I can get the jist of what they are saying.
...which essentially is that they aren't saying anything because their building is evacuated.

Also, it is apparently a holiday in Oslo?

Re: Oslo Bombing

Yeah, I got that right after I posted.

So, the shooting was after the blast...
From Al Jazeera:

A man disguised as a police has officer opened fire on Friday at a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party in Utoeya, an island on the outskirts of the capital Oslo, state television NRK reported.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg had at one point been scheduled to attend the event, police said.

The attack came just hours after a blast struck Stoltenberg's office in Oslo.

Re: Oslo Bombing

Apparently, there have been more shots fired on that island, you can only reach it by boat, people are swimming away from it, and some of those are children of 12 years.

Nah, it's just the middle of the main season for summer holiday. Which is a good thing, because that means many people are out of town, and there are far fewer civilians in the streets than it would have been in June or August.

Re: Oslo Bombing

An attack on/near the building of the Prime Minister who was scheduled to go to an event where someone did a shooting.

Hmm. That doesn't sound like a coincidence.

Re: Oslo Bombing

So what does the BBC do when they have to report something when there is nothing to report? Interview a bloody football player.

Yeah, that's what the observers are all saying, especially in a peaceful country such as Norway.

Re: Oslo Bombing

Maybe a bomb to distract attention, in order to make it easier for the shooter? Man, that sounds like something which happens in Hollywood movies, not in bloody Norway.

But who would attack a Labour party youth camp? Especially if he's firing indiscriminately at the people there?

I rather thought of the Prime Minister.
The shooter learned he survived, and decided to turn his mad rage into bullets onto others.

Yeah, I watched too many Hollywood movies, sorry.

Re: Oslo Bombing

Why would the Norwegian prime minister be target of an attempt? Upon a quick Wikipedia check, this guy is pretty much the least controversial politician I've ever heard of.

Re: Oslo Bombing

We won't know for awhile, and there's no point in speculating. A link is certainly possible, but let's wait for evidence.

Re: Oslo Bombing

Experts in Oslo think that radical muslims are behind this. Some Iraqi dude who was going to be thrown out of Norway, sent death threats to politicians. Also there were terror threats by al-Queda after Bin Laden's death.

Indeed. Right now, BBC reporters are pointing to the fact that Norway is next to Sweden, a country with a considerable history of violent political incidents. So apparently, there is pretty much nothing that can be said about this at the moment.

Yeah, http://forum.maidenfans.com/http://foru ... 44#p329244

So there has apparently been an arrest on that youth camp thing.

I have no idea. Anyway, a car bomb outside the government quarters would be a bad idea if they were after him personally - his offices are high above street level.
