Don't know if this would be a controversial Nightwish opinion, but three albums with Tarja and so far I prefer Floor in this band. Maybe it's because I haven't heard Tarja's best material with the band yet but something about her style doesn't resonate with me as well as Floor's. I know Floor does a fairly reserved and less operatic performance on EFMB but I really like it.
I agree with this. It might have a bit to do with Floor's vocals being way more varied and understandable. She's also a much better frontwoman.

Floor is definitely more understandable, that could be it. The constant operatic thing gets tiring after awhile.

I couldn't agree more. That said, however, my real introduction to the band was with Anette on Dark Passion Play. To this day it still has a lot of my favorite Nightwish songs. Once and Century Child are absolute beasts and Tarja is great on them. These early records are very hit and miss (I like Oceanborn a lot, but AFF is mostly terrible and Wishmaster is mediocre at best). Although I technically have more history with both Tarja and Anette, I far prefer Floor's voice and she's the Nightwish singer I've seen live. She holds a special place in my Nightwish heart and I'd love to hear more recordings of her singing the older stuff (especially some of the DPP material).
Actually my introduction to the band was with Anette as well. I started with Imaginaerum which I liked quite a bit, though I haven't really listened to it in awhile since EFMB seems like a bigger and better version of that album musically. I do like Anette's voice though.

Here it's not controversial. I am probably in the minority when I say I prefer the Tarja works. Not just the voice, also the songs.

Well, I like Floor more as a singer, but I think Tarja's voice fits better to Nightwish. I grew up with Tarja singing these older and stronger songs. That said, I have absolutely nada problem with Floor in Nightwish. She is impressive, in a different own manner. I am looking forward to see the band -for the, as crazy as it sounds, first time in the Netherlands since Floor joined!- in November.
Well that's interesting. I figured Tarja was probably universally loved. So far I much prefer Endless Forms to these early albums, but I'm hoping for some good competition soon.

To me, Tarja is signature Nightwish, even if the operatic style sounds ill-fitting at times, particularly in the earliest stuff. Anette has a great voice but Tarja is a very hard act to follow. Now that everyone is getting used to a non-Tarja voice, Floor could take things forward quite nicely, but it's still odd to hear.

Century Child and Once are absolutely stellar. Probably two of their best albums (despite a few clunkers here and there). But honestly, the first three albums with Tarja each have 2-3 good/great songs and a bunch of throwaways.

Just relistened to Wishmaster and it is better than I thought. A lot of songs jumped out at me this time and went up a full point in my rating scheme (namely Kinslayer, Come Cover Me, and Wanderlust).

Elven Romance
Passion & the Moondance
Kinslayer
2 for Tragedy
Bare Grace Misery
Deep Silent Complete
Dead Boy's Poem
Sleepwalker (either version)

Well that's reassuring. After three meh albums in a row I was starting to get worried. :p
Voting is hard right now, there isn't a lot of bad material, but not a lot of great material either. Everything is kind of in the middle, making it difficult to decide which songs to vote for.

Knick is very focused on Marco so don't listen too much to him. Stuff without him can also be good. ;)

That's true, and I agree, but the songwriting on those two albums is overall stronger than the previous ones. There are amazing songs on Oceanborn/Wishmaster, but they are sandwiched between a lot of filler with boring structures or average melodies. Part of what I prefer about later Nightwish is the vocal interplay, but also Tuomas' songwriting - it simply got more confident.

Marco does the male vocals now right? Some of my favorite moments on EFMB were his parts. Good singer.

Up until EFMB he did all of the male vocals. Now Troy, the pipes player, also does some vocals (I think on Edema Ruh and maybe one more). Marco has higher, often harsher voice than Troy, who sings in a folky baritone.

It's just not that great of a song. It set the bar for what the band would attempt later (Ghost Love Score, Poet and the Pendulum, even stupid Song of Myself) but it doesn't live up to those songs in any way.

I think Dead Boys's Poem has a great build-up. It's very moving, especially the later half starting with the rhythm on the toms. The singing is mindblowing. That melody is among the best in the discography. I'm astounded that people don't feel it here. Such a touching part.
Edit: in 2013 Tuomas said it was one of the most emotional songs he'd ever written. That can be heard I think. Also, the song identifies the band: http://www.beyondearcandy.com/site/index.php/interviews/298-tuomas-holopainen-interview (search for the title)

I listened to both Century Child and Once and Once is nog that great as a whole album. The two songs before and the two songs after Ghost Love Score are not that good. Four songs less good than anything they did on the three previous albums. Therefore Once is the worst since the debut. Century Child is very consistent from beginnend til end, als its two predecessors.

I agree with you 50%; I think Romanticide and Higher Than Hope are both solid songs.

As for Wishmaster, the only songs I remember liking are the first two tracks, Dead Boy's Poem, and FantasMic. But it's been a while, and I don't have time right now to revisit the album.

Dead Gardens, Creek Mary, and the Finnish song are all average at best, I agree. But the first four songs + Ghost Love Score are the best they've ever done and the rest is all quite awesome.
