Metallica

Very jealous! Big gigs are now out of my price range. I saw them at Reading Festival 2008 and they were amazing.

I have only seen them live once, back in the 20th century (Lisbon, 1999).

Great band.

I know what you mean regarding ticket prices. Thankfully, the tickets are cheaper than Maiden’s for the same section.

I first saw Metallica as an opening act in June 1988 on the Van Halen’s Monsters of Rock tour. They were fucking brilliant. Check out this setlist, wow.
Scorpions kicked ass that day too. Unfortunately Van Hagar sounded tired and lame.
Also saw them on the On Justice for All tour but I just never liked that album.

Me too, in my own hometown.

Mine as well. And Dokken!

I didn’t stick around for Van Hagar’s headlining set.

Also saw them on the On Justice for All tour
Me too! Also a great show.

Never saw another Metallica show after those, because they were unlikely to top themselves. Almost went to M72 as a farewell performance, but I balked at the ticket price.

I saw Tullica only once, in 2012 on the Entire Black Album tour (which I could definitely live without; funnily enough, the only time I saw Peter Gabriel live he was doing the So album in its entirety, which I could also live without, apart from Red Rain, lol) and I must say that they were great. Yeah, Lars is Lars (and I don't think he deserves to be allowed to repeatedly fill his mouth with water and literally spit at the front row fans, that's just ... disgusting), but they were on fire, which they often seem to be, and they made even stuff like Struggle Within and Sheep Shit work for me.

Also, Gojira and Machine Head were playing before that, which was the first time I heard the former and they were absolutely great, it was my biggest discovery of the year... and the crowd that mainly came to hear Nothing Else Matters was booing and whistling. Machine Head had absolutely shitty sound and when Tullica came on, they actually also got some boos from .... the crowd that mainly came to hear Nothing Else Matters. Yeah.

I (silly me) missed the opportunity to see Metallica in the Black Album tour in 1993 and had to wait until 1999 to experience their great live show.

I kind of lost interest after that (I was never a big fan), but having really enjoyed their last two albums, the opportunity to see them play two completely different setlists next year is too good to miss.

Only recently came to the conclusion Metallica don't have an officially self-released "Best of".
Here's my take on what could be a cool 2-disc set:

Disc 1:
  1. 72 Seasons
  2. Hardwired
  3. Dream No More
  4. Spit Out the Bone
  5. That Was Just Your Life
  6. Frantic *
  7. Some Kind of Monster (single version)
  8. The Unnamed Feeling *
  9. Fuel
  10. Until It Sleeps
  11. The Outlaw Torn
  12. Enter Sandman
  13. Nothing Else Matters **
  14. The Struggle Within
  15. Dyers Eve
Disc 2:
  1. Blackened
  2. One
  3. Shortest Straw
  4. Harvester of Sorrow
  5. Battery
  6. Master of Puppets
  7. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
  8. Leper Messiah
  9. Orion
  10. Fight Fire with Fire
  11. Ride the Lightning
  12. For Whom the Bell Tolls
  13. Creeping Death **
  14. Motorbreath
  15. Seek & Destroy **
  16. Whiplash
* Remastering is mandatory on these tracks (like in Some Kind of Monster's single version) for obvious reasons.
** Aren't among my favorites but obvious "must- includes" in a set like this.

@karljant

There’s quite a few tracks in there that I highly doubt the band would select for a “best of.” These include, among others, FFWF, Leper Messiah, Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, The Struggle Within, Dream No More, TWJYL, and anything from St. Anger. Lots of good tracks there, but most are deeper cuts.

A more realistic collection of songs in my opinion would be:

72 Seasons
Lux Æterna
Moth Into Flame
Spit Out the Bone
The Day That Never Comes
Cyanide
No Leaf Clover
Fuel
The Memory Remains
Until it Sleeps
King Nothing
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
The Unforgiven
Nothing Else Matters
Blackened
One
Harvester of Sorrow
Battery
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Creeping Death
The Four Horsemen
Seek and Destroy

I think they'd just have a boxset of singles and B-Sides once their career winds down. Probably 4-5 discs of 15 songs or so.

But, they've done a phenomenal job on the album deluxe remaster boxsets so far, so I really can't see them doing a compilation of sorts. Why put out something abbreviated when you're putting out everything?

Like I mentioned in my post, it is merely my take on what could be a cool edition. It is by no means 100% my prediction on what the band would do if they were to release a Best of. Even so, even if it was the case, I don't think it is that far-fetched, since TWENTY of the tracks on my list would most likely be featured.

72 Seasons
Hardwired
Spit Out the Bone
Frantic
Fuel
Until It Sleeps
The Outlaw Torn
Enter Sandman
Nothing Else Matters
Blackened
One
Harvester of Sorrow
Battery
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Orion
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Creeping Death
Seek & Destroy
Whiplash

That being said I even added a couple of songs I think are mandatory in Metallica's repertoire that would never be near my favorites, and in the process omitted tracks that, in my book, are all time favorites... namely:

Confusion
2x4
And Justice for All
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
The Thing That Should Not Be
Trapped Under Ice
Anesthesia

My mistake, I misunderstood.

Interesting that you mention 2x4, as I listened to Load remastered last week after not hearing the album for some time and have had that song in my head at random times. It was never one of my favorites back in the day, but there are a lot of other really catchy songs on there that I never paid much attention to previously, namely:

The House Jack Built
Wasting My Hate
Thorn Within
Hero of the Day (never liked this one in the past but it’s a good tune)

Even the decidedly un-Metallica Ronnie had me grooving. The only song I can say is absolutely filler and should’ve been cut in favor of extending Outlaw Torn is Poor Twisted Me. It’s like St. Anger-level bad.

Wasting My Hate
I still need to listen to that remaster, but Wasting My Hate is one that I have always loved and I'm glad it's starting to get more attention (including some setlist inclusions)! Such a different vibe for them and just a great, simple tune that's catchy as hell. It seems very heavily inspired by their digging into those influential tunes from Garage, Inc.

They’ve played it live recently?
