Metallica

I know this is a trite and overused critique of DM, but I still cannot get past the production. There are some 80s era worthy moments in that record, but the clipping drives me completely crazy to the point that I can't give it a proper listen.
It's not trite or overused critique at all. It's extremely valid.

The dumb fucks thought making it LOUD will increase sales. So they made it REALLY, REALLY LOUD. Knowing that it would and did clip.

Basically, they shat on their fans, hoping that it would make them more money.
The clipping is horrendous.

There are, however versions of the album, mastered by fans and taken from guitar hero that don't have the clipping. It sounds better but still, it's not a great album, the songs aren't that great.

I don't really listen to a whole lot of Metallica these days. That was just okay. I kinda agree with Knicks in respect to the whole palm-muted Eb/Em driven guitar lines with little else. Still, it's amazing how good a nice palm-muted Em sounds. I actually thought it sounded a little thin in those non-vocal sections; almost sounded like just one guitar. But, take away the vocals & there isn't a whole lot going on. I remember when I was young really liking Kirk as a guitar player. But, really, they could loose Kirk & it would make absolutely zero difference. Not really sure what he brings to the band. Is he still writing lots of the tracks?

Totally agree with all of this.

As for Kirk, I don't think he writes anything anymore. He tried, I guess, but lost all his riff ideas in LostPhoneGate 2015.

The new song is fine. That's it really, although Kirk is a terrible guitar player these days. That solo was atrocious.

It's weird how Kirk has gotten worse over the years...he was never a virtuoso, but at least he used to be competent.

Kirk got lazy and I sincerely doubt he's practiced his instrument in the last 15 years.

It's funny you mention that; I actually really enjoy the Black Album and the Loads now - I think Metallica are a better rock band than they are prog-thrash band now.

I totally agree. I'd love another Load-style album with heart vs. another hollow average thrash album.

The vocal melodies in this song are memorable. People are (still) very focused on Kirk, I see. I admit I didn't pay much attention to his solo even. I was so surprised about how the rest grabbed me.

Wow, that was...not good. As people have said already, the solo IS shoddy. Then again, Kirk haven't been that good since, dang, the Black Album? I also dislike the vocals and some of the riffs. The riffs otherwise sound fine, just a bit generic.

In general or on the last song? I realise nu-Jaymz might sound annoying to some, but the combination of that bloke's rhythm playing, singing and passion combined are the reason the whole Metallica boat hasn't sunk a loooooong time ago, IMHO. Could you imagine what would be if Hetfield had left along with Newsted?

St. Anger would have been, for all intents and purposes, a Lars solo album. Given his preferences at the time, it would have really become the aural representation of those Wednesday mornings when you get rudely awakened by the dustmen. :p

No, I just think this song is not good. Hardwired on the other hand is terrible. And no, I do not hate Metallica.

I enjoyed the song quite a bit. The album is starting to sound like DM part 2, but with a much better production. And that's a good thing since I like DM a lot.

No way is this DM pt2. This time last time we had 'The Day That Never Comes', an intricate, well written song with a classy vid. 'Moth' is a basic E groove. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not setting my pants on fire.
I'm bored of 'Hardwired' already. People say it's punky but Metallica can't do punk. Slayer can. Garage Inc demonstrates that Metallica are a rock/metal band as those covers are great, but the punk stuff's dire. Slayer's Undisputed Attitude is spot on.

For this album I'm getting a Book of Souls vibe, even the cover is similar with the bust. Rehashing old ideas, playing it safe, fans lapping it up. There's no adventure, risk, excitement. Maybe now I'm finally too old.

Not disagreeing, but The Book of Souls is a heavy metal album with a 19-minute piano-driven progressive epic, so your comparison doesn't work.

It does work if you take Empire away.

Even Empire rehashes a lot of ideas. The intro riff uses the same notes as the lead guitar in the Dance of Death intro, the main riff of the instrumental section sounds a lot like that one riff from The Legacy, etc.

Empire's very ordinary with a bit of piano. It's certainly long but not really progressive. Just my view. Fans seem to love it, the same with Hardwired and Moth but they're leaving me cold. Not totally, but mostly.
