Metallica to enter studio in March or April

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Great news.  I'm certainly one that hopes the next album takes the best parts of DM and sticks to thrash roots, with a care for production and a bit less repetitiveness.

C'mon, a producer dictating a Metal band like Metallica?!

You mean, like Martin Birch dictating on Number of the Beast?  Mutt Lange dictating on Highway to Hell and Back in Black, then later on Pyromania?  Rick Rubin dictating on Reign in Blood?  Producers matter, folks.

Suicide & Redemption kicks MAJOR ass.

Martin Birch dictating TNOTB? Where did you get this absurd from?! Maiden and Birch relationship was very open and they both knew their roles and were always switching channels, so much Steve's a producer. Please, don't compare Def Leppard and Shitallica with Maiden. Maiden never wanted to become yankee metal.

I'll have to check that  out tommorow morning.

Steve didn't begin to assert himself as a quasi-co-producer until later.  On Killers and NOTB, Birch was fairly autocratic, and Harris himself said that he just watched Birch early on.  (Source: Mick Wall's commentary on Real Live Dead One, which is the first album Harris produced without Birch.)  Note how they credit Birch on Killers as "headmaster" and "bullier" and recall Bruce's story (recounted on VH-1's "Classic Albums" show about NOTB) about how Birch forced him over his strenuous objection to re-record the opening bars to the title track dozens of times.  Remember, at that early stage of the band's history, no one really knew what they were doing.  Steve may have been the boss when it came to songwriting, but Birch initially controlled how the albums were recorded.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I know all these stories, mate. He did the same with Dio, on Heaven And Hell, on the 'sing me a song, you're a singer...' part and said to Bruce listen to that to achieve what was needed on the opening lines of TNOTB. Steve was a young beginner musician in the studio and he really had only to watch and learn. The producer is there to adjust things and see things that will make the songs flow better; there's no 'controlling' there. He was paid to do exactly what you described.

Right.  Dictating how the record would sound.  This debate has now become boring.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

No. You're messing up things. You don't know what you're saying, hence, it became boring. Very convinient.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Has anyone heard the unreleased "Death Magnetic" tracks?  They are awesome!  I hope Metallica releases a massive collection of unreleased stuff one day...I'm sure they probably have tons!  :shred:

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I loved DM... I was lukewarm towards it when it came out, it felt good but still it left me somehow wanting more. Turns out it has been a huge grower on me. I had a few problems with the sheer loudness of the production values, but the lenghth of the songs didn't annoy me at all, it all felt very well assembled (save for Suicide & Redemption, perhaps that one needed some trimming) I hope they keep themselves on this road.

St. Anger? Don't make me say I bought it in pre-sale to have it delivered to me the day it came out.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Haven't really been given Death Magnetic enough listens to judge it. I've heard it about two times all the way through and a few random tracks at friends places. I would not be able to mention any of the track names if you put the song on and asked me which song it was, except for the single "The Day that Never Comes".

I might give it a go sometime again soon, but the first two listens didn't grab me at all. And the songs were all over the place  ::)

Death Magnetic is an amazing album. Far better than the Black Album. Belongs to good Metallica. For me, Metallica has 5 albums. (Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All, Death Magnetic)

:o What unreleased DM tracks?

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

There were 25 songs written for DM, and 14 were recorded.  Only 10 were actually on the album.

There are also tons of unreleased songs from the Presidio recordings, about 2001.  I am curious as to how much unreleased stuff Metallica has.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I think these forum should be merged. There's no sense in having metal fans news and metal fans discussions. Both walk hand in hand (just like the Maiden Chat).

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Metal news is to specific news items while metal fans is for general metal discussion. However, some members have used metal fans to post specific news items. Ya, maybe they should be merged. Your best bet would be to email Jon so he can talk to the mods about it.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I'm not doing it. The forums are enough for the mods to take note on members suggestions.

Thanx for the tip, anyway.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I love Metallica, but I wish they would work on new material faster.  It takes 4 or 5 years for a new album, and while "Death Magnetic" was great...it's lost it's appeal somewhat.

Also, their forum is full of  :censored:  I used to go there but I had to stop going.  People think they know it all, and if you disagree with them you become the laughing stock of the forum.  Well, that forum is a laughing stock.

It takes them a while to start writing new stuff, but they also tour a LOT. I think that's the main reason behind the long gaps between albums. I'd be happy if they came up with a record that equals DM. I really like that record.
