Metallica to enter studio in March or April

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I think Death Magnetic was really good. Of course it wasn't like a 1983-1988 Metallica period album but you just can't hope that thing. Load was a great hard rock album, ReLoad was a average hard rock album. St. Anger was a piece of shit. But Death Magnetic had great riffs, good melodies. It was a little irregular. Production was not good. In St. Anger, they had no melodies, no feelings. They changed. It was Robert Trujillo's first studio album and Rob has a very critical role in the band I think. If they can use Kirk Hammett good in the next album, that will be badass.

i think metallica enjoy being sellouts. I know Lar$ does

I don't buy anything from these guys since 1998, when Garage Inc. was released.

I am with you Jeff. Since '88 i find their music boring and uninspired. Except Garage Inc.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I am a huge Metallica fan and I love all of their albums.  I'm excited for the next one.  I don't consider Metallica sellouts...I think they are a very creative band and they certainly have the right to change their direction from time to time.

I stopped with The Black Album. I don't care that much about them nowadays.

And I'll tell you why, mate: Metallica from Demos through Master Of Puppets is ripping off Motörhead, Diamond Head and Dave Mustaine writing the real Metallica music. When Cliff joined came harmonies, elaborated passages and the melodic element. When Cliff died, they still had an ace, which is the remaining material they arranged into ...AJFA (anyone can tell whatever, but will never tell it off of my mind. Does one really believe a musician of that caliber, who taught Hetfield how to apply scales, modes and harmony into his music would left 4 lines behind and they put it there as a homage to him? Make me laugh really loud, Hetfield! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhh!!!). When they (Kirk, Lars, James and Jason, which never was allowed to write in the band 'cos James and Lars will never allow someone else show that they're more talented, except Cliff) found themselves without any vault to clean with material left by Cliff and Dave, they had to get back to ripping off bands and write pop music with distorted guitars 'cos that's what they know to do. They had all the best excuses to cover up their musical incapabilities saying Heavy Metal was dying. Tell that to Steve Harris.

Metallica is a pifious band. If weren't for their first 4 albums and its phenomenal impact of the scene, they'd had vanished into thin air long time ago.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

@Jeff: Pop? I don't see any pop elements in The Black Album... Metallica changed because that fucker Bob Rock wanted that way...

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Always the opinions are strong with Metallica. Still, I personally thought Death Magnetic was a fantastic album and "All Nightmare Long" is easily one of the best tracks they have ever recorded. By letting Trujillo in on the creativity has helped.

And St Anger is not as bad as what people say. I personally and genuinely love it.

Don't Tread On Me sounds like Michael Jackson's The Way You Make Me Feel. The Struggle Within is boring as fuck!!! I quite like the album's hits, but none of those songs are up to par with any of the songs from the first 4 albums. It's a weak album with a phenomenal production. C'mon, a producer dictating a Metal band like Metallica?! Those manic savage headbangers?! Yankees are really good with posing and eluding the masses. They turned into that because they wanted.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Nothing else matters is still played on the radio every now and then.  :innocent: And i mean those stations the bus driver usually listens when is bored on the road lol.

I would disagree to a certain extent; I like several songs on the album besides the hits.  If you don't compare the album to their earlier ones, it's quite enjoyable.  Wherever I May Roam, Enter Sandman, and Of Wolf and Man are solid hard rock songs, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matter are great ballads, and Holier than Thou is a decent thrash metal piece.  It doesn't stand up to the earlier four, but the Black Album is still usually a pretty enjoyable listen as a whole.

Or because they were out of ideas? ... AJFA was pretty much written while Cliff was still alive...

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I wrote that on my first post regarding the issue: They surely found themselves out of ideas and were striken by their musical incapabilities, when came to the time for writing new songs. Then, they took the easy; they could've kicked ass and gave a big fuck off to everyone, as they always did, and write real Heavy Metal tunes. A band that came from a complex masterpiece such as ...AJFA write an album like the black album... make me laugh.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

There are three Metallicas. The first one is one of the best bands of history produced 5 albums. Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All, Metallica. The second one is a good hard rock band produced 2 albums. Load, ReLoad. Third one is one of the worst bands of history produced 1 album. St. Anger.

I don't know who produced Death Magnetic. It must be "Metalica" or "Mettalica" with a typo.

Edit : My mind changed a lot since I posted this :D

Looks like they were afraid not to mess up, so they were going easy way: writing simple, and fair tunes. I totally lost my interest in them after that...  ::)

Correction.

Metallica 1: Great Metallica -- The first thrash four, DM (despite shity production)
Metallica 2: So-so Metallica -- Black Album, Garage Days
Metallica 3: Weak Metallica -- St. Anger (had potential), SM and the Loads of Shiite.

I can agree. But just on 1st and 2nd Metallicas. Death Magnetic is really good. But it's just on a different type. Not like first albums. Yeah it's thrash and good but it's differrent. Maybe that comes to mind because of mental problems in my head about Metallica. (They're my second favorite band after Maiden so) I don't think that Load is a bad album. Load is an average hard rock album, ReLoad is a good hard rock album. They're not weak for me. And St. Anger is just a piece of shit for me. Had no potential.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Death Magnetic was definitely a step in the right direction, towards their 80's sound and I hope there's even more of that sound on the next album.

Also, this is of interest:
METALLICA will wind down the touring cycle behind its 2008 album "Death Magnetic" later this month in New Zealand, with the band having been on the road for more than two years. While there are possibilities for more live work in 2011, drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that the band is starting to get the songwriting itch too. "There's a bunch of balls in the air for 2011, but I think the main one is we really want to get back to writing again," he said. "We haven't really written since, what, '06, '07, and we want to get back to kind of just being creative again. Right now we are going to just chill out and then probably start up again in, I'd say, March or April, and start probably putting the creative cap back on and start writing some songs."
