Metallica to enter studio in March or April

Travis The Dragon

AFTERGLOW!!!
Rob Trujillo suggests that the band “almost have too many great songwriting ideas”. Strong words, indeed!

Rob Trujillo has revealed that Metallica have been writing for their next studio album, though it sounds like a release date could still be some way off. Speaking to 3 News prior to the band’s September 21, 2010 concert at the CBS Canterbury Arena in Christchurch, New Zealand: “All of ‘Death Magnetic’ was written on the ‘St. Anger’ tour in a room like this, on the road, and we’ve been kind of doing the same thing on this tour. I mean, we won’t together and go, ‘Hey, OK. Ready? Let’s write.’ I’m jamming and all of a sudden, you’ve got a great sound and ‘Whoa!’, a riff just appears. There’s a vibe.

“We’ve got lots of material. We don’t dare start going through it, because that just starts the unraveling of it all — it’s like, ‘OK, which is the best riff? We start with that one,’ and blah blah blah.

“We want to get to a place of rest and chill after the tour and then we start writing.

“Every album we wanna write the best stuff we can. And that’s the thread between all the albums. It might sound really extremely different, every album, to the fan that’s out there that doesn’t see what we do from 2010 to 2015, or whatever it’s gonna take… And by no means am I saying it’s coming out in 2015!”

“Five years is a lot of time between the last record and the next record — between touring and the writing and the (whole) thing. A lot things happened in our lives, and we just want to make the best one possible. We don’t know who the producer’ll be even or anything.”

“One thing I can say is… It’s amazing because when we get into a jam environment [at] our little headquarters out in California, it’s like the minute everyone puts on their instruments, you just start having fun. I mean, it’s kind of like being a teenager again, and that magic is still there. Whereas most bands, as they get into a certain place in their careers, they almost lose that drive and that motivation to create, to where sometimes they even have to hire outside writers. But that’s completely nonexistent in this band; it’s almost like sometimes there’s too much great stuff, which is a great blessing to have that, a good fortune. But it’s very exciting for us. I almost feel — at least for me personally — that ‘Death Magnetic’ is kind of a launchpad into what we can be doing and what we will be doing. ‘Cause stuff, to me at least, is already sounding good. This guy right here [turns to Hetfield], he plugs in his guitar, turns the volume knob and he’s got an insane riff. It’s that easy for him. [Laughs]”

Hetfield: “It’s not coming from me, man. It’s powers elsewhere. I’m just the messenger, man, bringing the metal message. [Laughs]”

Hopefully they'll go for even more of the sound of their first 4 albums. Death Magnetic had some of that, but at least 75% would be great.

And without songs that are twice as long as they should be.

Death Magnetic was a vast improvement over St. Anger in this regard. Give them a chance on this one.

Yes, it was a MAJOR improvement. The length of the songs on DM didn't bother me at all because they didn't feel 8 minutes long.

I only have a vague recollection of St. Anger. Which means that I'm not excluding the possibility that I could like it now, seven years on (did I just type that?), but back then it was enough to take the CD out of my player and yell at my brother (who played it to me) to never play it again. In fact, I nearly punched him. Literally. My arm was actually twitching. So I don't know anything about the length (both relative and absolute) of St. Anger's tracks, only Frantic and the Title Track, two songs which I liked a little at the start.
So, I can only go with Death Magnetic, which I actually bought (a mispurchase that I regret now, I could have gotten something better for that money) and had on my MP3 player for a while (I deleted it because it was constantly blasting my ears). In many instances, I was thinking to myself, "this song wasn't all that bad" until it didn't stop and went through its entirety again without adding anything- it just repeated itself. Talk about a song outstaying its welcome. There are songs like Rime of the Ancient Mariner or 2112 which are very long but don't feel that way, because there is always something happening. They weren't meant to be that long, they just turned out to be. But with the mass of Death Magnetic's songs, I have the feeling they wanted the songs to be long, but didn't have enough ideas. There are instances of good songwriting, and Death Magnetic could be a good album - albeit still a step down from the band's classic moments - if the songs weren't longer than they can afford to be.

To be honest I actually prefer 'St. Anger' to 'Death Magnetic'. The latter is over-produced and I can't hear any detail in the music, they were trying too hard to be the old Metallica again. 'St. Anger' had some pretty good ideas on it but they just weren't done properly. That album was probably under-produced (especially Lars' biscuit tins). I kind of respected Kirk's thoughts about not wanting to do traditional guitar solos but if you leave them out then they need to be replaced somehow. 'St. Anger' was almost a Machine Head album without the solos but 'Death Magnetic' was just an unbearable wall of noise. One day I will give it another listen but for me it's their worst album.

The new Metallica album will be amazing!  :rocker:

I also can't wait to hear all of Metallica's unreleased material, that they keep locked up in vaults.  But they won't release that stuff until they retire...so hopefully not for awhile!

What is up with all the unreleased stuff from you TFF?

It gives you something to look forward to after the respective band retires.  Wouldn't you like to hear the leftover studio tracks, and other rarities at some point?

Yeah, I totally agree.  That's what I mean, after the respective band retires.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

Which album they'll try to emulate now? I think it'll be Puppets or the debut.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I'm through with Metallica.  Death Magnetic was nothing more then a sad attempt to rehash their glory days, and on the fast songs, it really shows that they can't play that kind of music anymore.  I won't be purchasing any new Metallica.

Re: Metallica writing material for new album

I don't buy anything from these guys since 1998, when Garage Inc. was released.
