Post definitions for the various metal sub-genres. Also ask questions about the differences between them.

And what about progressive metal. How can you exactly define that? Is it to push the boundaries and try something new or is it just to emulate your band's sound to that of Dream Theater/Queensryche/Fates Warning?

Bands like Accept, Dio, Warlock, and Judas Priest. Music is: Heavy, melodic, and usually super-catchy and super-simple. You are old school. You know what you like and despite many others coming along claiming to do something better, you stick to what you know is good with an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” kind of mentality. You are conservative and sometimes you feel like others are passing you by.

Prog metal is very musically based metal. its got different time signatures, long instrumental sections and complex structures. It doesnt have really a certain sound (both opeth and DT are prog metal). I think it just means you use a lot of music and change riffs, tempo a lot.

I got hardcore. then i tried the pussiest approach and got thrash [!--emo&:huh:--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--] . intresting.

edit: not too sure about nu-metal. I think its about experimenting with very different things like tribal precussion and electric sounds. Slipknot, Soulfly and Ill Nino are all nu metal and i cant really fit them anywhere else.

I think I should be expelled from this forum. I've taken the test twice and each time I came out as Nu Metal. I even changed my answer from "If it ain't broke... Break it!!!" to "Make it better"... Boundaries are actually needed not to generalize, but yes, saying that a band is good purely based on the genre it fits in is idiocy.

These questions have all been asked to me by people who see my music collection.

Why did you do this?
This was basically a little joke when I started it. I was not sure where to put single files I got from magazine samplers or band websites, so I decided I'd stick with the genres named there. It eventually became the quest to seek for the most absurd genre. For a while, I had found it: Atmospheric Symphonic Brutal Death Metal; but alas, the mp3 link on the bands website was broken.

What the hell is God Metal?
A genre I made up for Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

Did you download this all?
Very little. Most of it was legally purchased.

Is this your entire music collection?
No. Many CDs and vinyl records were not ripped. My physical music collection consists of (to date) 291 CDs, LPs, DVDs, 7" and 12" singles and Maxi CDs. My most recent purchase is Wizard-Odin.

Is the above list an accurate description of your musical taste?
No. I did not rip any Classical music, so this does not appear there at all; likewise, a couple of my favourites are not there because either I do not own them and listen to them from my parents or my brothers music collection, or they are on LP and I can't rip them.

Which artists do you have most files of?
Iron Maiden, Queen and Jethro Tull if I'm not completely wrong.

Which artists do you have complete discographies of?
Iron Maiden, Queen, BLAZE, Bruce Dickinson, Demons&Wizards, Led Zeppelin, Brian May, Majesty (I may have missed some). Almost complete are The Doors and Pink Floyd. Many albums haven't been ripped though.

Can I make fun of you because you have music of <insert genre label here>?
Do as you must. A lot of the music here was given to me by friends on compilation CDs, and I don't throw away music. I have categorized it all, but I haven't listened to it all yet.

Do you have a problem?
Yes, but that is none of your business.

Are you serious about this?
No, this is a form of protest. I'm trying to show how ridiculous it is to categorize music by stuffing it into as many boxes as possible and creating new ones when other categories don't fit.

What I find amazing about Cruachan is that they are Irish and yet barely anybody in Ireland has heard of them. while I did have th urge to say something incredibly "smart-ass" I'll refrain and instead post what I did in the speed metal post:

The idea of sub-genres helps people (I think) find bands they will like. For example: Therion and Children of Bodom are both "Heavy Metal" However I love Therion but don't care much for Children of Bodom. I want to find more bands like Therion and don't even want to bother looking for bands like CoB. So I look for "Symphonic", "Melodic", "Power" Metal bands and shy away from "Black", "Death", "Gothic" Metal bands. That is the only real purpose I see for sub-genres.

Ammendment: Few bands transcend genres, for example, as subjective and personal as Perun's list is I tend to agree that death Metal is "noise", however I LOVE Opeth. They are just good and sub-genre doesn't matter. However most bands are only considered "good" or "great" inside their sub-genre. It is rare to have a hardcore death metal fan say Dragon Force is the shit or a hardcore Power Metal fan say they like Soilwork or something like that.
