Personally, I'm quite interested in genres, but only to a certain extent. If I were ripping a CD and it ripped it simply as metal, I might bother reclassifying, but at most I would put two adjectives in front (and that's only really 'Melodic Death' and 'Symphonic Power', which is Nightwish etc.). Generally I would class metal as:
Plain Fucking Heavy (Maiden, Priest, the usual crowd)
Uber melodic (Power/Symphonic...which
is power)
Brutal (Death/Black)
Brutality with Melody (Melodeth, some Black Metal, Bodom etc.)
Prog (If the opening track is over 8 minutes long, it's a proggy album. If more than two albums go like this, they're prog [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"

Folk/Viking-more lyrical than anything
Ummm....oh yes, one last genre
Shit (Nu/metalcore)
The day the new generation of american vocalists realise
their death growls sound like whiny shit will be a good day. As will the day they all spontaneously combust upon seeing H's brilliance [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"

Back to the topic, genres are quite important to me, for several reasons:
1. CD's are very expensive where I am, and I don't have much money. I can't afford to impulse buy and get some terrible Slipknot/Cradle of Filth clone, so I research bands similar to the ones I like at the moment.
2. My local HMV is shit for metal. Half of it is metalcore/nu metal, with about 3 Maiden CDs, all ridiculously overpriced. With not much of a selection, I find myself looking at CDs online, which are sorted by genres and 'Try this...' links, which help me find new bands that I like. But, essentially, if they're anyway melodic or really good at riffing, and put some thought into their music, I'll probably like them.
