Metal sub-genres

It wasn't meant for you to personalize it... just a simple explanation why MOST people who aren't as gifted and special as yourself can find bands they like, it is not a crime to attach oneself to one genre or sub-genre of music, in fact it is quite normal.

I got thrash metal [!--emo&--]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Anyway, back to the subject. I've found a way to settle this problem : I label every metal bands as metal. [!--emo&:P--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--] The only band I didn't do that with is Sack Trick because their songs are already tagged with stupid genre like drum solo or folklore.
I think we can develop the issue a bit further. What about individual songs from Metal bands? For example Annihilator and "Sounds Good To Me" - hardly a Metal song, is it? I've taken that test btw, and I'm supposed to be Death Metal. Don't ask me why...

As you lot seem to be into hair-splitting, I found [a href=\'http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/List%20of%20heavy%20metal%20genres\' target=\'_blank\']this link[/a] to fuel your (quite pointless) conversation. [!--emo&^_^--]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I am afraid I fueled the conversation by trying to stop it with reverse psychology. I guess it just doesn't work [!--emo&:(--]/sad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'sad.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

While on the topic of sub-genres, I'd like to remind you all of [a href=\'http://forum.maidenfans.com/index.php?showtopic=9909\' target=\'_blank\']this thread[/a] that gave many interesting definitions of the different styles of Metal out there. [!--emo&^_^--]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I listen to music regardless of genre. I like bands, not genres. I can't think of any genre, metal or not, that I consider to be good as a whole - there's seldomly more than a handful bands or so keeping it worthwhile - and I don't judge bands by the genre they're labelled as.

I don't mind sub-genres like heavy, death, black, thrash and power metal, but when you get to stuff like "symphonic melodeath metal" the categorizing confuses more than it helps. But since every band want to seem unique a lot of meaningless sub-genres with little difference arise, and fans start nitpicking about whether a band is melodic death or regular death metal.

I personally tend to like bands that doesn't really fit in any of the sub-genres, like Bruce Dickinson, Sack Trick (there's no band like them), Blind Guardian (a combination of speed, power and prog metal), Death and Dark Tranquillity (both death metal bands but very unique within the genre). I see no point in trying to categorize those bands when obviously no label fits them.

Adrian Smith cannot be categorized.

I think it's funny that about 0.01% of the Irish have heard of their greatest metal band and yet a few Germans and danes are really into them, like you Perun [!--emo&:P--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Nice to see that our emerald isle can produce some fine slabs of metal as well. All the mallcore kids here are just following that NWOAMH trend when they don't seem to realise that the very country they are in have bands that will beat those lame metalcore bandwagon hoppers any day of the week. I'll might try to get either something by Primordial or Scald this weekend. Have you tried out anything by [a href=\'http://www.mourningbeloveth.com/mourn/mbframes/mournframeset.htm\' target=\'_blank\']Mourning Beloveth[/a]? They are an excellent Doom/Death metal band heavily influenced by My Dying Bride. For all you doomsters out there 'The Sullen Sulcus' is highly reccomended. Personally, I'm quite interested in genres, but only to a certain extent. If I were ripping a CD and it ripped it simply as metal, I might bother reclassifying, but at most I would put two adjectives in front (and that's only really 'Melodic Death' and 'Symphonic Power', which is Nightwish etc.). Generally I would class metal as:
Plain Fucking Heavy (Maiden, Priest, the usual crowd)
Uber melodic (Power/Symphonic...which is power)
Brutal (Death/Black)
Brutality with Melody (Melodeth, some Black Metal, Bodom etc.)
Prog (If the opening track is over 8 minutes long, it's a proggy album. If more than two albums go like this, they're prog /wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /] )
Folk/Viking-more lyrical than anything
Ummm....oh yes, one last genre
Shit (Nu/metalcore)
The day the new generation of american vocalists realise their death growls sound like whiny shit will be a good day. As will the day they all spontaneously combust upon seeing H's brilliance /biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":D\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" /]
Back to the topic, genres are quite important to me, for several reasons:
1. CD's are very expensive where I am, and I don't have much money. I can't afford to impulse buy and get some terrible Slipknot/Cradle of Filth clone, so I research bands similar to the ones I like at the moment.
2. My local HMV is shit for metal. Half of it is metalcore/nu metal, with about 3 Maiden CDs, all ridiculously overpriced. With not much of a selection, I find myself looking at CDs online, which are sorted by genres and 'Try this...' links, which help me find new bands that I like. But, essentially, if they're anyway melodic or really good at riffing, and put some thought into their music, I'll probably like them. /wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

speaking of sub-genres. can anybody recomend good melodeath bands? I only have in Flames and I like them a lot, but there is more out there obviously. Lately I've gotten this itch to give death metal a try and I thought by starting with the easier stuff to listen to would be a good idea.

From that earlier quiz, I got death metal...Which is funny, cause I rarely listen to the genre, I swing more between Black and Power metal

Dark Tranquillity! Get them now! They're better than In Flames, vocally and instrumentally! Michael Stanne has some of the clearest and coolest death growl I've heard to date. Keyboards are an integral part of the band, you can actually hear the bass. Jesper Stromblad is a more talented guitarist, but Niklas Sundin and Martin Henrikson focus more on making good riffs and melodies rather than the more virtuoso folkish melodies Jesper uses. Overall, the whole band works really well as one body (almost forgot-Anders Jivarp is an ace drummer), and I would recommend them to you wholeheartedly. Try Character, their latest release, or the 1995 masterpiece The Gallery. Alternately, you can try for some of their more expeirmental work. Haven is one of their most accessible albums, whereas Projector is experimental with its use of cleaner vocals (somehwat overused, though). And Damage Done is definitely their most aggressive work, but still very melodic. Their first release, Skydancer, is somewhat poor in that it has very good songwriting that is hampered by poor production and Anders Friden's vocals (he was in DT for a few years, and his harsh vocals were poor back then).

And if you're looking for something to slay emos to, try Amon Amarth. Perfect mid-tempo axe-wielding Viking metal. Vocals are excellent, and there's literally tonnes of melody, accompanied by some ace lyrics about Midgard and Ragnarok and whatnot.

I took the quiz and got Death Metal as well. But changed one thing (how do you take criticism? - well it depends who's dishing it out!) and got Thrash!

I don't think many people know where those places are, and I'm not going to take a trip to Carlow to see a band I've only heard two songs of... maybe if they came to Derry /cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /]

I'll do all the promotion for them I can, and I asked them if they would be playing in Derry anytime soon. They said no /tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]
