Yeah, to me there's something genuinely scary in the end where he walks through the creepy dump apartment again only to see the pipe which leads somewhere... up...
I don't know exactly why, but the episode sends chills down my spine. It's probably thanks to Sarafian's directing, which has always felt pretty eerie to me (the sixth episode of the fifth season, Joy, is another fine example - the cold opening is just ... chilling).
But that's just me and my weird horror preferences (this also coming from the guy who thinks In the Mouth of Madness is great and actually scary horror movie... and isn't all that scared of the original Exorcist, for example).

Some guy in Moncton, a small city about a 3 hour drive from me, decided to start shooting cops this evening. He's killed 3 RCMP officers and hurt two more. The RCMP of all three Maritime provinces as well as the Canadian Army detachment from nearby Gagetown are hunting this fucker down.
