We have this "Influences? Stealing? Tribute"-thread in which the discussion has been revolving around Gamma Ray in the last few songs. I gave "When The World" another listen and I claim that the song contains no less than FIVE musical references to Maiden songs;
- Flash of the Blade (intro)
- Out of the Shadows (chorus, it actually sounds like something in between Out of the Shadows and The Longest Day)
- Powerslave (the gallopp starting at 3:12, the feel of that section is so Powerslave'ish that I was preparing to sing "into the abyss I fall ..."
- To Tame A Land (from 4:12), the part that Maiden "copied" from the classical piece "Asturias"
- Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (from 4:42).
In addition, early in the first verse they sing
"the number of the beast", and the little bass fill before the chorus makes me think of "New Frontier". Maybe mr. Hansen was on a real Maiden listening binge before writing the song?
Anyway, it is a damn enjoyable song
