Well, Dunno what GK had in mind with that red letter A, but there is a novel, written about the 18th century (I think), and its about a woman that had an affair, and was given a red letter A to wear on her clothing.  She was basically kicked out of the community.

Thats just my memory of it.

That is nasty.  Yesterday it rained all morning, and the ground was frozen, so it just flooded everywhere, then it froze and snowed some, so now there are many deep frozen puddles all over the yards and fields.  I hate winter!
