Compassion always comes first, but ask yourself if your team was made of that kinda guys, what would be the leverages against the management?
One of the trademark Croatian quotes is - "be quiet, at least you have a job". Minimum wages, non-registered overtime and weekends, no vacations, but at least you have a job. That kind of dogma leaves a responsible worker on the edge, you aren't getting your full rights because others seem to be OK with theirs fucked up, so why are you such a snowflake?
Because of this shit I did a spectacular fuck you I quit, back in 2012. It was the apex of crisis back here, job engine served me an ad or two weekly, for the whole "ICT" category for the region of 1 million people. After a few months jobless my balls really started shaking and I even started questioning my capabilities. But I never questioned the quit.
It turned out good in the end, but back then I was a guy with no loans and no commitments. I was the worst employee ever - young, experienced, educated, self-reliant, and no house, no wife, no kid. Today I already have some, tomorrow I'll have a full set of those.
Tomorrow I might not hate the guy for what he is, but I'd still tell him, as a friendly colleague, what kind of situation is he putting others into.
Also makes me think of a former team lead, who had a personal arrangement with the company and worked a lot of extra hours for cash - below the counter ofc. The company conjures up some shitty time tracking system, and of course they're gonna test run it internally, lucky us. Anyways he was logging 12+ hours daily, we just came up to his office and said look mate that's not ok - whatever arrangement you have with them it's yours, they look at dumb charts and your 12+ hours makes our 7-8h look bad. He said uh yeah didn't think from that angle and it was resolved in 1 minute.
