First day in university. I'm not quite a regular uni student and don't have all the legal rights and obligations of one because I attend the "open university" which lets you compile your own curriculum and you have to pay (higher education is generally free in Estonia) but the lessons take place together with the regular students. I'm in the same subject field with a friend so I won't have to feel lonely and that's great.

Good luck! Our semester doesn't start until 14th October. Or at least the other students say so. I really, really hate the university bureaucracy. :D

It's good to know that I have a colleague who watches cat videos on Facebook all the time.

When I was working at a telecom, one of the employees used to watch porn all the time. On dual screens, with hallway window just over his back. He also walked around without his shoes. This was a workplace with corporate dress code etc, heavily enforced. He got ditched in the end because he didn't do his work properly, after a year or so...

Edit : just remembered. 9 years ago, start of summer, I got employed by a company and just started evaluation. Mid-evaluation, after 15 days or so, I realized that the company is severely underwhelming. Month passed and the boss called me to say that they're satisfied with the work, but that I'm not blending in. I said, yeah well the work at matter is a bit dull, he said yeah well we work slowly with new people, we don't give them responsibilities, and I've heard you've been browsing around the forums for most of your office time...to which I replied, well I wouldn't be around the net if my job wasn't too easy and too boring. We shook hands and I found a place that satisfied me for next few years, pretty soon.

So yes, MaidenFans have been mentioned over corporate exit talks. Beware

My presence on Maidenfans was noted at one point. Mind you, another colleague spent most of her time texting her husband and another spent more time eating and gossiping than actually doing work.

PhD students can do whatever they want as long as they show their supervisors some work. I spent afternoons in July watching the Tour de France.

Well, of course. If my boss ever said anything to me, I'd just point out the amount of crap I do in a daily basis. Besides, I've gotten to the point now where I am paid to know things, moreso than do things.

I think we were technically banned from using the Internet for 'leisure' use eventually, but seeing as a major part of the job was researching info online and using social media to promote articles, that was difficult to prove

People constantly seek leisure. It's the normal part of doing things, you work, you break. You work, you break. You work, you break. Fighting people casually browsing is a huge mistake; people are more productive when relaxed.
