There's some vehicular arson going on in my city, throughout the course of last two months 12 cars have been burned. Interesting part is that those belong to an seemingly disconnected group of people who are military retirees, former cops, court employees, etc. #illuminaticonfirmed

It's called Boxing Day in the UK and the colonies. Something to do with tradesmen collecting gifts in a box from their customers for that year. Some people do work today but it's still a public holiday.
 
Some people work Christmas Day too. Not sure how employers get around that, probably tell staff they can have a day off in February or March, or finish half an hour early here and there. Or they're classed as self employed.

Or they get 2.5x or even 3x the pay that they normally do? I have a couple of mates that love working Public Holidays for precisely this reason.
 
In the UK (& the rest of Europe I'd imagine; since it's European law) there has to be some compelling need for an employer to impose contracts which allow the Working Time Directive to be circumvented e.g. service providers. Many staff (all doctors) in the NHS, for example, are working out-with the Working Time Directive. All other industries just ask; provide financial incentives (double-time, triple-time, double-time in lieu, etc); or alternatively coerce their staff into working. If you're self-employed the choice is entirely you own; you could however have promised/agreed work withdrawn by some large/main employer i.e. be coerced into working.
