Well, my Grandmother did not make it. About to fly to the funeral. Supposed to be 4 F tomorrow in Joliet . Had to bust out/find the winter dress clothes, which luckily still fit.

She did good making it to 98 and I had a nice week with her last week, spent about 3 hours a day with her talking, she was 100% there mentally until the end and never and serious pain. So all in all, if you have to go, that is the best way.

If I had not been up there do much, I would have gone to the Bears game Sunday, but coming home Friday insteaduring

You can't ask for much more than that. Sounds like she had a hell of a life to celebrate - my condolences to you and your family, my friend.

One particular grandmother of mine died younger, at age 85, more than twenty years ago. What's so nice is that between 1955 and 1963 she sent a couple of hundred letters to one of her sons who moved to Brazil. He still has all these letters. Since a while ago, he is sharing these, digitally, with the whole family. Very interesting. They tell a lot about herself of course, but also give a vivid impression of those years. My father, uncles and aunts are reliving their past, but for the grandchildren it's fascinating as well.

Learning about the past and family history is really important and to pass along. We talked quite a bit about her childhood, my Grandfather's time away during the war, a what the hell are we going to do now when he got back, a holy war between her family (Swedish Protestant) very my Grandfather's family (German Catholic) and how that eventually ended, etc. Was very interesting and I have been sharing that with my kids.

File compression format found to alter timbre of music causing loss of some emotional context

A small team of researchers with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has found that compressing recorded music into the MP3 format results in the loss of emotional tones, leaving the result with less depth. In their paper published in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the researchers describe their study of the impact of compressing recordings of musical instruments and which instruments suffer the most degradation.

Most people who listen to music saved as an MP3 file know that the sound quality is lower than that of a CD or a vinyl album. But what is lost and by how much has not really been investigated. In this new effort, the researchers sought to learn which types of musical sounds lose the most emotional quality when a file is converted to MP3 and by how much. ...
