I need to listen to more punk. I've been getting into a lot of post punk though, stuff like Talking Heads and Joy Division. I also really love the first Television album, Marquee Moon. A must for fans of great guitar playing.

The BF is a big fan of New Model Army. They've drifted from post punk to folk rock and all kinds of other genres. The Mission also came from that scene but were more gothy.

But here's a big middle finger to all of the new wave, post-punk stuff and all of the popular trends at the time who all stole from the REAL hardcore punk :D

Dunno where else to post this, so here goes:

I bought a guitar few years ago but never learned how to play. I put it off because I wasn't in the mood at the time and never came around to actually start playing. I have an opportunity to sell it next year but I wanna give it one last shot before deciding. So any suggestions on how to start? Any easy tutorials/books/videos that could help me out?
@Saapanael, @Mosh, @MrKnickerbocker (and anyone else who plays guitar :))

Well depends on what you want to get out of it. Sounds like it'd be more of a fun hobby so I would suggest learning some basic chord shapes and techniques and then try learning some easy songs. I'm at work now but when I get home I can pull up some helpful resources.

I agree with Mosh here. Since you're a metal guy, maybe also learn some basic scales and power chords too. Or just start reading tabs and jump in to easy riffs. That's how I started and it gave me a basic musical understanding before I really delved into any theory.

As already said, NP, try a mix of learning technique, some useful chords, scales/arpeggios, and just learning to play something you enjoy playing, with the help of tabs. I was religiously learning all the basic chords and scales, then discovered that just a handful of easy-to-play power chords meant I could play along to quite a bit of Maiden. If you're enjoying playing simple stuff, you play for longer and it all counts towards building up strength and suppleness in your fingers.
