Don't do your own local news site. That's silly and it's not profitable. Blog about something else. Blog about wargaming or model painting - huge numbers of people from around the world are into that. I am not, I get my buddy Connor to paint my custom miniatures, but I am into wargaming.

One of the reasons my old paper is in freefall is that there's a local news FB page which is taking all the readership through a combination of recycling other publications' articles and encouraging users to submit their own news and gossip. It has thousands of followers more than the local paper and is ahead of the local paper on practically all local news. We were struggling to see how the owner makes money - probably gets paid to promote local businesses in amongst the news posts - but as far as I'm aware he earns at least a portion of his living from it.

I'd have to blog on something other than wargaming. I don't game myself and there are plenty of much more knowledgeable and well followed blogs out there.
