I'm on call this week, and that means running queries and doing server restarts for our clients after hours. I get paid OT for these tasks, so it's all good, except when someone wants something done really late.

Coworker: Hey, can I get you to do a server restart at midnight?
Me: I dunno, it's kinda late.
Coworker: What about at 2...minutes...to miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidnight?
Me: Metal. Done.

Edit: and the case number is 666656

But our on call involves dealing with system errors and stuff. We do do some server reboots, but never after 10 pm.
Yeah, I'm on call for late night crashes and stuff. Rarely happens, and I have only ever had one call past 11 PM, which is when I go to bed.

It was for an unsupported issue and the guy screamed at me till I hung up on him.

I prefer The Who to Queen. There, I said it. :D

Heresy! Naw, fair enough, I just never got into The Who (although I enjoy the odd Entwistle vid on youtube).

I saw them live at a festival around 2006 and while I admired their energy, I was bored after about 20mins. Had to stay at the front though, James Brown was comin on after :nana::nana:

Systems are so much more reliable these days, so it's rare here too. Fortunately, we don't have to take calls from any one unless it's the IT director. And my phone goes into "do not disturb" from 11pm to 6 am regardless. If someone is locked out and can't login, it's next day stuff.

Still, if there is a better AC/DC track than this absolute classic, I'd like to hear it.

We are retail and it's only AMs and stuff logging in to run a report or something. They all have smartphones so emails can be checked easily.

Yeah that shit can wait till morning!

I just realized you haven't been here since I switched provinces and employers, so yeah, pretty cool stuff.

Do you think it's possible that your dad's mom did that overnight while climbing on a chair and without telling her kids to give them the impression that their dad is still around somehow?
It was a VERY tall tree so that would be impossible. Plus, how do you explain the other things I described?
No, it isn't. There are certain realities that cannot be ignored. We cannot go faster than the speed of light, for example; we cannot get colder than absolute zero. Light cannot escape a black hole.

Theories differ about what happens when we reach the end of the universe. It would be interesting to see what occurs.

No, those places are human myths.

That's before the Big Bang. Due to what we think about physics, there's no way to know what existed beforehand. Likely, another universe, but possibly with different rules...

No. It stops at the Big Bang.
Those are all some very interesting thoughts. And I don't just mean our Earth and galaxy that we live in. I mean all of space and time. And I see you do cover that in your 4th statement. It's just amazing all of the mystery that exists out there. Hopefully when we die, it will all be explained.

All this talk of being on call and rarely getting issues, the IT director rang me last night. He couldn't print and asked me to investigate. The print server was rebooted (MS updates) and it did not look like all the services came up correctly. Rebooted it again and it seemed to be OK but he was heading home by then.

Aw. Now I feel bad, old bean!

People ...

I guess many of you have read the story about the anti-gay preacher who has earlier claimed that floods are God's punishment for allowing abortions and gay marriage, and who has now been forced to leave his home due to a flood.

Of course, the major Norwegian newspapers have picked up on the story, and I just saw it on the Facebook page of one of said newspapers. The comments section though ... several people, who obviously disagree with the dude, claim something about karma.

Ironic that non-religious (I assume) use one of the most absurd terms in the world of religious ideas. The idea that you get what you deserve. Every day, people who have done nothing wrong suffer a terrible fate. Meanwhile, you have dictators, criminals and psychopaths living a pleasant life. Karma, my fuckin' arse.

Almost so that the odd conspiracy theorist served as comical relief (of course, there was one commenter blaming HAARP for the flood).

Drink, I say.

We've had some UKIP folk here saying the same thing about floods.

Anyway, I'm still pondering over the best file manager to use on my android tablet. Anyone got any suggestions? Of course, it needs to be able to see SSH locations though I can deal with it seeing SMB shares. Dropbox stuff is a plus, but not essential.

You must see Woody Allen's Crimes & Misdemeanors. :D Or Match Point, but Crimes are better, IMHO.

However, these people are also somewhat wrong about that. I'm not that sure about the specifics, but I'm pretty sure the real karma (as opposed to the "general opinion") is supposed to work from the inside. That is, doing and saying bad things taints your inner self, so you will then not only do more bad things, but also see more bad things and see more things as bad. So from this point of view, although it originates in a religion, the idea is something many atheists might agree with.
