Random thought for the day: It's always a fascinating thought to me that things that seemingly have a major influence on my life now went by without me noticing their existence at the time. I remember seeing a guy with an AMOLAD t-shirt back in 2007, it wasn't until two years later that I started listening to Maiden and learned what that was.

Basically, there will be weeks in limbo for everyone. We don't know how many heads will roll in our department.

The morale has been higher before, I reckon.

Well, they have given us the option of applying for a voluntary "severance package" by mid October. The terms aren't tempting though, unless you have another job lined up already.

Well, I don't want to quit this job if I don't have to, so I won't be applying for the severance package. In today's market there aren't that many jobs available in the same business. Of course there are other industries, and academia (although I don't have the formal competency for teaching, I think I would enjoy teaching engineering students).

I guess what I meant is that if you can line up another job, you might be better off doing so. I certainly hope you aren't in danger right now, but they seem to have it set up purposefully so you don't know. That's very rarely a good sign.

Do you know if any colleagues want to take voluntary redundancy? They sometimes announce that option first hoping enough people sign up, then they don't have to make any job losses compulsory.

A few have talked about taking it. And I'm sure the top management would hope that a fair share of the reduction can be done through voluntary resignations.

Now off for beer and jamming with one of the "work band" guys.

Well, they're also restructuring the entire division, so probably there are no names on the "kick list" yet. To put it this way, we don't know whether our department (currently approx. 90 employees) will be cut by 5 or by 35. But I don't believe we will be the department to receive the hardest blow, as I know there are others with more empty order books ...
