Or a slightly closer comparison to Sabaton: Manowar.

I think of it as a band that's not entirely serious, usually with some sort of gimmick involved that overshadows the music.

Interesting. It was my understanding that Sabaton can be taken more seriously than most Power Metal bands. There is always a certain amount of cheese involved in the genre but I would rate the "epic" meter higher than the "cheese" on Sabaton.

I'm not too sure about this; I haven't really heard anybody hold Sabaton higher (or lower, for that matter) than German power (Helloween, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, etc.) or USPM (Manilla Road, Helstar, Omen, etc.)

I'll throw my hat in the ring: I hold Sabaton in the same high esteem that I hold "power metal" bands like Kamelot and Iced Earth. I hold them lower than Symphony X (but I consider them prog, not power).

All that said, Sabaton is the Abba of heavy metal.

Of course the phrasing is a bit cheesy since Sabaton members don't speak perfect English.

There certainly is a lot of spam on the forum this lovely Easter holiday Monday morning...

In regard to Sabaton, I guess I just don't like Power Metal; therefore I'm unlikely to like Sabaton. The whole sound/tone of Power Metal is just too clean sounding for me. The guitar tone that they have is the sort of tone you move on from once you've been playing guitar for a few years. Except, they haven't. That's kinda how I feel about it. And, I find the whole war-themed songs thing a little bit odd to be honest. It's interesting to hear that most of you actually don't rate them that highly (in the grander scheme of things). Still, it's incredible how much the forum seems to talk about them.

I think I have to explain something about Sabaton.

I don't take them seriously. That may come as a shock to some here, because I talk about them a lot. But I don't measure them with the same stick as bands like Maiden, Primordial, Atlantean Kodex or such that I worship. I throw them together with others like Alestorm or Powerwolf. And in that lot, Sabaton are the best. Because they are over the top. Because they are a parody of bands that put on bullet belts and sing about war all the time. Because their singer acts like a frustrated porn star. They are a band I like to listen to when I'm in a silly mood, or when I just need some uplifting. I'm not always an entirely serious person, I like to have fun as well. And when I want to have fun, I like to listen to silly bands. I love Sabaton precisely for their singalong melodies, their soap-opera drama and lines like death in the shape of a panzer battalion, insect of terror don't run face your fate like a man. It's just not meant to be taken seriously, and I'm sorry if people think otherwise.

I don't take them seriously and I still do not enjoy them. It's not my sense of humour, if you'd like to put it that way.

All of you have put your arguments on the "we don't take them seriously" side when I never said you did. Seriously or not, I don't think they're enjoyable. That's all.

If ABBA sucked...then that would be correct. Hey, I like ABBA! Don't judge me!

Why would anybody judge you for liking great music? There are other genres that deserve credit than Metal. Although to be fair, a vast number of Metal keyboard warriors out there would differ. :D

My comparison is not about the quality of music. Personally, I can't stand ABBA. But that they are easily digestible, good time fun music with sing-a-long choruses from Sweden, just like Sabaton.

You're a very serious kid compared to where Perun and I were at your age. Of course, you're living in a very serious place, and maybe that's to be expected. I don't have a problem with you disliking Sabaton. You can not listen to it all you want. I just don't think that it's fair to say they suck, when they are, technically, pretty ok. It's not like they fuck up their songs, or play songs that have poor skill required of them. They simply aren't your cup of tea. They aren't your Turkish delight.
