Unlike the Summer Olympics, the winter ones have a few disciplines I actually care for, so I am looking forward to them.

I'm confused about The Olympics. The opening ceremonies are supposed to be tomorrow night, but it looks like there are some events going on right now. What's up with that?

It's been that way for several Games now. They start some of the qualification events before the opening ceremony (which is tonight), but no finals.

I'm thrilled as always when the Winter Olympics start. The first event I really look forward to is the men's downhill on Sunday.

You and LooseCannon must be the only people on the forum who are really bothered about the Winter Olympics. There's no rowing or cycling so Britain sucks.

I prefer the Winter Olympics tbh, I like watching skiing, especially Super-G. I usually watch bobsleigh and luge, too. All I watch in the summer Olympics is equestrian.

I do like the speed skating actually. Does anyone remember the Australian guy that won gold a few years ago?

Ah, Steven Bradbury :D One of the most surprising winners ever, I'd say.

@LooseCannon - I guess you would like to see Canada destroy Russia in the ice hockey final, in Putin's own back yard?

I'm not too optimistic on behalf of the Norwegian hockey team. Some of the influental players from the last IIHF World Championships are out. In addition, the opposition is going to be stronger since many more NHL players will participate. That means plenty of added quality to most teams, but Norway's got only one NHL player at the moment.

I have high expectations for the cross-country team, especially the women. Speed skating? I expect it to be dominated by the Dutch, but I hope Håvard Bøkko can give them a good fight on the 1500m.

In the alpine skiing contests our best shot at gold is - of course - Aksel Lund Svindal, he's one of the favourites for downhill and Super-G (he's finished top 5 in all the World Cup races this season, if I remember correctly). Also, this season has brought the breakthrough of a new slalom talent, Henrik Kristoffersen, who won his first World Cup race only a few weeks back.

Then there is biathlon, where I think we have many strong candidates. For women, Tora Berger will probably be involved in the fight for 1st in all events. For men, we have plenty of candidates, but then there is this French guy who'd surely like to stand in their way.

I love the Winter Olympics. Summer Olympics are fine, but for the winter ones I will be glued to the TV daily.
Guess that come from living in a winter country.

Yes, both Fourcade brothers, in fact. And Raphael Poirée, from a few years back.
Well, apart from the obvious fact that they're French, they've always been the main rivals of Bjørndalen, and he's my favourite biathlete.

Well, fair enough. I usually don't dislike athletes because they beat my favourites. There are often plenty other reasons to dislike people. Being French? Well, sometimes that's a good enough reason, but one of my favourite footballers is French, so I'm divided on that point.

But of course I hope Svendsen and Bjørndalen give Fourcade a very hard time in Sochi.

I don't know too much about the other sports that are available for watching, but I love watching them. I enjoy the Summer Olympics too, but nothing catches me up like the Winter.

What I like about the Olympics is the convenient flagging of athletes so I can simply pick based on that and cheer blindly. You just need a hierarchy. Mine goes like this: Canada - UK - USA - Sweden - other commonwealth countries.

Except in hockey. Then it's Canada or bust.
