If you lived as far north as I do, with the limited daylight we have in November-January, you would appreciate anything that made it lighter outside. Snow does.
 
I guess I can be thankful that we have nice balance of day and night over here. :) It gets dark sooner in winter but not compared to what you experience up there.
 
And the difference grows faster the further north you go. Trondheim, where I lived 2002-2011 (500 km north from here) has two hours less daylight every day in December. And you all know what happens once you cross the Arctic Circle (about 400 km further north).
