but if you are not really a reader, see the films

I saw the films without reading the books, cos I am a reader, but not really a reader

Then it's your loss.  A friend and I were talking to another friend who's not a 'reader'.  He argued that the films are so much better than the books because '...you can't see a book'...

I think the best is first to see the films, and after to read the books...
like this he will be not dissapointed from the films
I've did it with The Name of the Rose
and it worked very nice

Always a bad sign.

I'm not so sure I intend to either see the film or read the book. The LOTR trilogy has not, as such, appealed to me - I could be persuaded though. :D

But to see the film then read the book is generally better - yet I read the book then saw the film - Da Vinci Code. This worked for me because a) while I was reading the book, there was a billboard poster in our town advertising the movie at the cinema and I walked passed it every time I was out walking the dogs - so this put in my mind what each of the main characters looked like and b) the book was well described (at least in my view).

Now to receive a flaming for actually enjoying the film and book.

Screw the trilogy, start with the Hobbit.  Then read the trilogy, and then read every other bit of Tolkein literature.  Whatever his critics say about him, I doubt you'll find anyone who invented such a rich and diverse mythology (which, like all religions/mythologies, steals bits and pieces from other religions/mythologies).

That destroys the beauty of any characterisation, that it is up to the individual what he interprets the characters to look like.

Poor book, appalling movie.  The plot gets plain hilarious during the last 1/3...how the Catholic Church considered it a serious threat, I don't know.

That is true, but I didn't lose any sleep over been told what they looked like before hand. ;)

I'll say that the plot was a bit farcical towards the end - when I got there, it just felt like a bit of a damp squid as we all really anticipated the outcome. Having said that, I still enjoyed it. :D

Anyway - let's not get bogged down in how good or bad books are against films and so on. This is meant to be a bit of fun. So, :spam2:

Uhh, the phrase is 'damp squib'.  As in, a squib...a firework, being damp, therefore not going off, therefore disappointing the crowds.  I don't know about you, but I'd be more disappointed if I ordered a squid and it wasn't damp! :P

You knew what I meant Raven - I'm sure most others did as well. :P

You presume much.  I know what a damp squid is, but I don't know what one was doing in The Da Vinci Code.  Unless Jesus was a squid?  I sense a conflict with the Church of Raptor Jesus looming!
