Actually, it benefits me if they hold the announcement back as long as possible so I can have time to figure out where I will be the next time Iron Maiden come around.

I think there's more than meets the eye with Metallica's Antarctica show. They like doing full albums shows to celebrate anniversaries (Master of Puppers, Black Album) and it is ten years since 'St. Anger' came out, so where better a place than Antarctica to play that album in full?

I don't foresee any announcements until like March?! next year or so, since they're officially on break right now...
They can be on a break (#Friends ) and still make announcements. After all, Steve probably doesn't run the website! Big tours get announced earlier and earlier these days anyway, and the European festivals get their headliners announced before Christmas as well. So if there's a festivals tour in the pipeline...

Yeah, because it would crash if there was an announcement.

Reminds me of sometime a few years back when they had a big mystery counter on their site, possibly for some announcement around Final Frontier or maybe even further back... AMOLAD? Anyways, once it got down to like a few hours their site couldn't hold all the traffic and it crashed for a lot of people for HOURS and everyone missed the news and had to like read it the day after or whatever.
