Let's try and get 1,000,000 replies to this post

I think there's nowhere better to write this. (considered creating a thread, but no) I'm trying to widen my music archive. I'd be really helpful if you guys adviced me to check out some albums. I'm not looking for a band's whole discography, so if a band did one good album and garbage afterwards, it doesn't matter. From any genre. Pop, disco, jazz, fusion, alt rock, prog rock, electronic, synthpop, indie rock, hard rock, folk, classical doesn't matter as long as it's good.

I've been working on a list of albums to get since yesterday and it features albums from Tangerine Dream to Michael Jackson to Weather Report to The Doors. I might go on a spamming mode sometimes and quote this post to attract your attention, sorry about it. :p
Flash, I have a list of favourite albums, made in 2006. It does not feature jazz, prog rock, pop music, classical or electronic music. Around that time, it was metal, metal, metal, in various kinds. But it also features albums from other bands that are very dear to me, namely Midnight Oil and Bad Religion. I will leave out the albums I'm sure you know (1980s Helloween, Sabbath w/Ozzy & Dio, Maiden and most solo/related, Queensryche, Priest, Iced Earth, Rush, Dire Straits, Floyd), but there could be more you have already heard.

edit:
I've bolded every band once.
edit 2:
I have selected my favourites of these favourites in red, but as you see, it doesn't help much (still a lot).

Since 2007 I am not so impressed by new metal releases as before. So instead, in more recent years I've been delving in older acts (various genres) and in the genre of Jazz. I find it difficult to recommend such albums, but might give it a try later.

Cheers Nat. There of course are many albums (or works since your list included classical composers all of which I'm already a fan of) on your list that I'm already familiar with and some that I'm a fan of, actually eight of my top ten bands are in your suggestions (Dream Theater, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush -it only lacks Maiden and Opeth). Will check out the ones I haven't heard yet.

I kind of imagine my musical tastes to be in line with the average on this board :p. My eccentricity comes in the form of loving classical music, but there are lots of members who like it as well so really...my tastes are just average. :(

Lots of members loving classical music? I don't think there are many. I certainly wouldn't say your taste is average.

Yes, but -apart from Perun- they don't have the bulk of such metal records in their favourites. SMX is more old school oriented, Mosh isn't so much into extremer (aggressive) sounding metal, with grunts, and Wingman listens to 8 or 9 heavy/trash metal bands besides Maiden (hope that doesn't sound offending, but I often see the same names! :).

I'd say you and Perun come closest. But that's not average.

Wingman: I have told you before, what I find unique about your taste is that I have hardly seen you talking/mentioning any Maiden (Bruce/Adrian/Blaze) and Priest (Halford) solo ventures. I remember Accident of Birth though!

Most of the metal albums I'd recommend are already recommended, and since I don't listen to a whole lot of other genres (it's 99% metal and rock for me), this will be kinda short:
Gorillaz - Gorillaz, Demon Days and Plastic Beach (pretty much the only music with rap influences that I like)
The Clash - The Clash, Give 'Em Enough Rope, London Calling, Sandinista! and Combat Rock (this is mostly punk, but it has A LOT of influences from other genres)

I've also been a "fan" of classical music since I was very young, yesterday was actually the first time in a while that I listened to some, and found it amazing how much today's music has received from these centuries-old pieces.

But you listen to so much metal! You're constantly pointing me in new directions, I would've thought you had like, pages worth of suggestions.
Speaking of, I did check out that Enslaved album (Axioma Ethica Odini) but the vocals really did me in. I think the tracks Giants, Night Sight, and Lightening were the easiest on the ears, and were even really good if you ignored the occasional death growl.

Eh, I just woke up :p + It was much easier to find non-metal stuff to recommend cause I don't listen to a lot of it :p
@Enslaved: I don't have a problem with vocals, but I know they can be annoying for people who aren't into growls :) Lightening is my favorite song from that album. Album that comes after Axioma Ethica Odini, Riitiir has much more clean vocals btw.

So here goes:
Amorphis - Eclipse, Silent Waters, Skyforger, Magic & Mayhem - Tales From The Early Years (re-recordings album), The Beginning Of Times (I'm not a big fan of early Amorphis, but they would be one of my favorite bands if just based on these albums)
Arch Enemy - Rise Of The Tyrant, Khaos Legions (female growls!)
Blind Guardian - everything they released up to and including Nightfall In Middle-Earth
Hypocrisy - Abducted, Hypocrisy, The Arrival, A Taste Of Extreme Divinity (melodic death metal, lyrics are mostly about aliens, alien abductions and similar conspiracy theories)

No one mentioned Iced Earth, wtf  You should just check out all of their releases cause all of them are fucking amazing.

Kreator - Violent Revolution, Live Kreation (live album), Enemy Of God, Hordes Of Chaos, Phantom Antichrist
Masterplan - Masterplan
Satan's Host - By The Hands Of The Devil, CELEBRATION For The Love Of Satan
Testament - The Gathering, Dark Roots Of Earth
Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge
Alice In Chains - all of their releases are fucking awesome

I'll continue later, I have stuff to do.

I was playing Lego with my son and he suddenly says he wants to build a rocket. So we made one and "went" to the moon. Then I thought I'd show him some Apollo footage and now he also wants to make a launch tower. :)

My daughter keeps asking me to take her to another planet. :)
