Back in at work. We have a triumvirate of IT guys here (me being the newest), but I'm the only one here today (holidays and such here in the States).

So, it' s kinda quiet and kinda nice. I'm thinking, since I'm alone and unlikely to be disturbed, its time for A Chemical Wedding.....

I assume you will gladly mention a few clear examples right away, that are just as striking as the one discussed above?

PS: You are the one who says it is to be taken as bashing ;)

I did couple of pages ago. There are so many of them. The Alchemist-The Aftermath-The Edge of Darkness. Intros to The Legacy-The Talisman. Intros to Alexander the Great-The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Genghis Khan-Hallowed Be Thy Name. Losfer Words-The Duellists. The Fugitive-Fear of the Dark. Dance of Death-Face in the Sand (I'm sure Brigantium is talking about this one), Brighter Than a Thousand Suns-Lord of Light. Just to name a few.

I won't even bother to write about backing rhythms, just listen to Run Silent Run Deep, Caught Somewhere in Time or The Trooper to note them.

I must say, you have a lower threshold for considering two melodies similar than what I have. AtG and Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner??? For some of the songs I am not at all sure about which parts of the songs you are referring to. Would you mind to point that out, so I can check it out later?

Which part of Losfer Words sounds similar to which part of The Duellists, and so on?

I considered doing that but I'd take too much time. Just listen to the songs and you'll notice them all.

ATG and Runner are similar. I didn't notice that until I picked them both on guitar, even though they're played with different rhythms, there are so many identical notes. So much so that I sometimes mess up and start to play Alexander the Great after starting with Runner.

No. The fact that you find those intros (AtG and TLOTLDR) similar and I do not, shows that these things may not be as evident to others as they are to you. I am not going to listen to pairings of songs over and over again thinking "which part can The Flash possibly be thinking of?". I don't enjoy listening to songs that way, and it would take much more time. But OK, give me one, then. Which part of The Duellists is similar to which part of Losfer Words?

I disagree. In Losfer Words, one guitar is playing steady palm-muted chords on one note whereas the other plays a chord pattern that forms a melody. In The Duellists, the steady chords are the "lead", so to say.

I hear what you're saying. You can definitely hear a difference but they do sound similar but played a bit differently. Flash could be talking about another part but when he said those two songs, that's what stuck out to me.

The Alchemist 3:35 - 3:42 / The Aftermath 3:51 - 3:57 / The Edge of Darkness 4:47 - 4:53
Genghis Khan 1:46 - 2:10 / Hallowed Be Thy Name 1:18 - 1:36
The Fugitive 0:47 - 0:57 / Fear of the Dark - Verse Backing
Dance of Death - Second part of the intro - Verse backing / Face in the Sand - Intro (also sounds kinda similar to Blood Brothers)
Brighter Than a Thousand Suns - 2:33 - 3:17 - Lord of Light - 3:50 - 4:53
Losfer Words - Intro / The Duellists - Intro
Alexander the Great - 1:07 - 1:35 - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - Intro

Of course you can hear some difference what do you expect to call two pieces similar, being a simple copy and paste ?

Thanks. I'll give those a listen when I get home from work.

I think the parts from The Duellists and Rime are really similar, to the extent that you can say they are the same musical idea with a slight alteration to the melody. For that pair, the only real difference is found in the melody line. The rhythmic feel is the same, the chord progression is fairly similar as well, it's not just the notes in the lead melody.

I did a sweet thing today (giving a present that really meant something) got a smile and it made my day. You really can be happy with little things, it seems.

Me? I think you mean Brigantium, I think she is the one that mentioned something about DoD.

I found out yesterday that Hooks in You, as cheesy (and bad) as the song may seem, has a genius harmony in it. 2:36
Also listened to NPftD in its entirety, it has many awesome harmonies, some pretty cool solos and I can now honestly say that FotD is the only album that I maybe dislike.

I've always thought it was the little things that were biggest. It's easy to 'muster' oneself to do a 'big' thing. It's little, everyday things that are more difficult to maintain.

Yeah, you're right. Little things are most of the time are more deep and intense than supposedly big things. Giving a present and getting a smile is a little thing, but the fact that I gave it to "that girl" and kept my promise of one year [one year ago when we were chatting on the net, she showed me that band t-shirt and said "I'd marry the one who were to buy me this t-shirt regardless of gender" as a joke then I said "I will buy it for you" (explanation : it was nowhere to be found in Turkey, only in U.S. - reminder : she didn't find out about my feelings for her until eight months later), almost one full year had passed, she had forgotten about the conversation and promise, until today] makes it deep and meaningful. It applies to most stuff, really.
