Ravi Shankar, sitar legend, the man who made Indian music popular in the West, died.
I didn't know he was the father of Norah Jones.

He inspired and played with many others, such as George Harrison, who also took the sitar to the Beatles:
Also his 1971 concert for Bangladesh was a great example for benefits to come:
He got an Oscar nomination for his soundtrack for Gandhi.

He also played with John Coltrane for a short while. Sadly, there are no recordings of this meeting, but the eastern influences (and instruments!) in some of Coltrane's music can certainly be heard.

2006 already. Maiden made their best album with the current line-up. For the first (and last?) time in their career they played the entire album live.

2006: Hezbollah bombs Israel, Israel bombs Lebanon, America bombs Iraq and everybody bombs Afghanistan. Dan Brown convinces us that there are hidden codes in particular modern translations of the Bible that reveal secrets of Christianity, Daniel Craig is the new Bond and Déja Vu becomes the most implausible movie I have ever seen. Iron Maiden release one of the strongest metal albums of all time and I get to see them live for the first, second and third times.

...and I'm off to work.

I was late.

You lead me on the path
Keep showing me the way
I feel a little lost
A little strange today

Just curious. What's your reasoning as to why AMOLAD is superior to BNW? I'm myself particularly fond of BNW, which is my favorite Maiden album.

No prob, Yax. But that'd be a rather long story. Best thing to do is read my reviews of the individual songs (naturally I am willing to copy some of it overhere!). But in short:

Compared too AMOLAD I have more negative "complaints" on Brave New World, which imo mostly touches lack of variation, over-repetition or lack of originality, depending on the song we speak about. I don't rate Thin Line and OOTSP as high as most others and I am not happy with the copying in The Nomad, nor do I find The Fallen Angel that excellent. Also I'm not that much over the moon by Blood Brothers as most.

I find AMOLAD more original and it contains more variation also within the individual songs (and less repetitions), although The Longest Day and FTGGOG are exceptions. Also Different World is not that special.

I personally prefer AMOLAD to BNW, although if you had asked me a few years ago, I'd probably have told you the opposite.
The problem is with BNW, actually. It has lost much of its initial appeal to me. Although I still enjoy listening to it, I can surely say that the individual songs on BNW are weaker than the ones on AMOLAD taken out of the context of the album.

BNW suffers from lack of idea behind it, I would say. I don't mean that every album should be conceptual, but in my opinion the best Maiden albums are at least loosely centred around an idea - SIT, SSOASS, The Final Frintier and AMOLAD. BNW seems like a random collection of songs thrown in.
AMOLAD, on the other hand is extremely consistent - both in terms of songwriting quality and in terms of concept and imagery. It feels like an entity.

EDIT: Morning, Moon Child!

Another EDIT: Bugger! I have 40 minutes, I won't be able to finish my wok.

The difference in ranking between the current line-up-albums are not that huge, except for Dance of Death which I rank much lower..

Actually, when TFF came out I initially liked it a bit better than AMOLAD, but not anymore.
Probably AMOLAD is more consistent indeed. Also, later on I discovered some unoriginal (recycled) elements in the TFF material.

When we speak about individual song ranking, it looks like this (focusing on the best ones). In my favourite 50 Maiden songs, this is the output of the last four albums, and the best two BNW songs score very well:

18. Brave New World
25. Dance of Death
26. Ghost of the Navigator
29. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
30. Paschendale
33. Isle of Avalon
40. Starblind
42. Lord of Light

I did not get to see the AMOLAD tour :(
And I have yet to see The Early Days documentary
I plan on on filling that second gaping hole in my life sometime during the holidays. :)

I had a dream tonight where I was going to school with a tuxedo on. So I decided to wear my school jacket for the first time this year, can't lie, I've missed wearing that jacket :D
