I'm not sure I understand what exactly is implied by "projection". The way the director portrays masculinity, the way the main character sees the world through his male eyes, or the characteristics that the world attributes to the character.

my marriage is falling apart

Yes, unfortunately. We've been drifting apart for a long time and I'm starting to realise that we have nothing in common. We're close to the point where we can barely stand each other's company. At least I am.

Hmm, wish I could cheer you up somehow, but this sounds like something that can continue for a while.

A little attempt, just for the moment, to move the thoughts in another direction: Did you know my son is called Adrian?

Don't tell Cried, because he'd say I'm nuts and that I'm making a myth of Adrian Smith! ;)

Actually, my son is the fourth consecutive generation of Adrianus which is the full -let's say Catholic- version of the first name. Adrian is the "calling name" as we say in Holland. I was named after my grandfather and we decided to name our son after his grandfather (my father also has this first name). Also the husband of my wife's sister, in Poland, is called Adrian.

But the name is very convenient as Adrian Smith is naturally one of my heroes in my favourite band. Adrian is quite rare and confusing in Dutch because most people either think you'd write it like Adriaan (which is regular), either pronounce it in English (and then the Smith reference pops silently up in my mind ;-). I guess Adrian is more common in Eastern Europe and on the Balkan.

I thought it was because of Adrian, but it is a nice coincidence that you have the name running in the family. :)
And yes - you're right, the name is quite common, at least in Bulgaria, especially in its female form Adriana. I assume it's more popular in Catholic countries, though, like Poland.

Yes I am happy with that coincidence (and combination) as well.

Not that it's that interesting but after more than 50 years or so, my aunt renamed herself Adriana (she had a totally different name before that and I esteem that she perhaps wanted to be "closer" to her long dead father like this).

Oh, I see. Interesting.

I'm not sure about how this works in other countries but we have a very strong tradition here for naming children after their grandparents. It's not uncommon for mothers to agree to call their kids a name they don't like just to please their in-laws. I personally find this appalling and I'm glad no one put any pressure on me over my daughter's name.

What's hers if I may ask?

I am glad about that as well. Naming after someone is not a strong tradition in our country anymore but I am sure it was done in the past.

Plus, it's not a quantitative study based on hard data, evidently, so can't you just make it up like the usual fuzzy academic bullshit? Perun, what exactly is the assignment? What medium?

The assignment is a presentation I'm holding today, in a seminar about Iranian film and Gender Studies. I'm going back to something similar I did a while ago, about portrayal of Afghanistan in two films: An Iranian one (Kandahar) and an American one (Rambo III), only this time I'm examining it from a gender perspective. So I decided to give it the title "Projection of masculinity in film, by the example of Afghanistan" (trust me, it sounds a lot flashier in German. I'm using the neologism "Männlichkeitsprojektion", one of those compounds that only works in this wonderful language). "Projection" or better, it's slightly differently nuanced German version, is one of my favourite words at the moment. The problem is, I reviewed my script last night, and I figured that I'm not even sure what that is supposed to mean. Okay, I am going to give an answer to it, but I decided to start out by asking the people in the seminar what they think it means or could mean, similar to what I did here; i.e. I just wanted to have an idea what expects me.

I'm not sure I understand what exactly is implied by "projection". The way the director portrays masculinity, the way the main character sees the world through his male eyes, or the characteristics that the world attributes to the character.

Those are all three pretty good and valid ideas. You actually gave me some things to work with there.

my marriage is falling apart

That's sad to hear. I could try and give you some advice from the experience of how my parents saved their marriage, but they'd been together for almost 40 years at that point, so I don't know how well it would apply.

Teodora is a pretty name, btw.

I'd be interested to hear that.

Oh I just saw the bad news, Foro. Really sorry to hear that and I'm sure you'll get through this even though the life has been too harsh to you for a while.

Ariana, I'm sorry to hear about whats going on... Hope that whatever happens is for the best.

I also have to say that Teodora is a pretty name. :)
