First Slash in February, now Satriani in July. Plus Maiden of course. Where am I supposed to get moneyz for all this? Maaaaan...

Foro: Sorry for your loss.

This has been a really crappy year. I've attended too many friend/family funerals. Nothing like what Foro has endured, though.

Not that long ago, it seemed like I was attending at least one wedding a month. Now it's funerals and retirement parties.

If I say that I am going to study the projection of masculinity in a particular medium, say a film, what exactly would you say I am studying?

I would assume you mean you are looking through a film to see how a certain person portrays his 'manliness'. Like how does Clint come off in Dirty Harry vs (for a far dif perspective) Patrick Swayze in Too Wong Foo.

That's what I'm asking you. What parameters would you apply? If I asked you, how is masculinity portrayed in a certain medium, where would you start looking?

You see, I am not sure (yet). :)
First, I'd need to define masculinity as good as possible. Somehow, at the moment, I can only find negative stereotype things like macho behavior and violence (though the latter can apply to women as well in certain genres of film).

I wonder if a story or script can also be called masculine, e.g. The Godfather. The women have no importance in that movie.

Well, that's a start. But even if you can positively identify masculinity, you may want to test such an identification by holding it against a contrast.

As a cinema buff, perhaps you'd agree that Jimmy Stewart had a pretty masculine image without being particularly macho or violent. Ditto Atticus Finch, Gary Cooper in High Noon. Someone who is strong, principled, decent, independent. Or, study "buddy movies" like 48 Hours, etc.

Plus, it's not a quantitative study based on hard data, evidently, so can't you just make it up like the usual fuzzy academic bullshit? Perun, what exactly is the assignment? What medium?
