I wonder if he really dressed like that for the pic.
Most probably.
I am currently trying to come up with a list of my favourite metal studio albums. The choice of what bands I consider "metal" is still quite arbitrary... right now, UFO, Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy are in, Deep Purple, Queen, Rush and AC/DC are out. I'm really not sure how to solve that problem. Maybe I will reduce it to Rainbow and Black Sabbath for early acts, because those have the biggest metal "feel" for me.
Next, while sifting through the list of potential bands, I noticed that in many cases, the album I was going to include is the only album by the band I actually know, or know very well, meaning I should listen to artists like Death Angel, Moonsorrow, Anaal Nathrakh and Vader a lot more.
But it looks like I might be able to narrow it down to 100. Right now, I have a list of 113 potential albums, with three bands I might exclude completely, and a number of albums with question marks behind them. Obviously, Iron Maiden are dominating with twelve albums in the draft, although I might throw two out. There is surprisingly much thrash and surprisingly little black metal in the list, which means to me that I need to re-evaluate some things. Little death metal, as I expected, but surprisingly much power metal: Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards, Sabaton, Powerwolf and Savatage are all in. I'm not dead certain about the Powerwolf album, however, and I might also exclude one of the two Sabaton albums.
Chronologically, I think the eighties, nineties and 2000s are pretty evenly covered.
