I caught two or three minutes of the 9/11 stuff on the television last night. And I made an observation about myself that is troubling me a bit. Not only was I disgusted and apalled by the crude emotionalism the celebrations were filled with, but I also found myself longing for the days when imperial self-portrayal was about displaying a sense of stoic dignity. Quite an odd thing for a person like me to think.
