"Did you try turning it off and back on again?"
"Did you pull the battery?"
"Can you take your head out of your butt?"

Not even.

"So your phone was shut off and you'd like it back on. Let's see...yeah, looks like you haven't paid your bill in 4 months."

Haha!  That's perfect!

"Well, I was going to pay it today, but since it was shut off I couldn't pay it.  If you turn it back on, I'll pay it.  If you dont turn it on, I'm not paying!  So there!"

You lucky Loosey!

So, my computer crashed again. It lasted long enough to write a second draft for my BA thesis.

Sometimes I wonder why I put up with all this.

Because you, like so many other academics, are a wee bit masochistic? And, at the same time, have invested too much effort to give up? And because in between all the toil and tears, you stumble across interesting things?

It's like we have the same mind. Still, it's all going under the premise that it will pay off some day. Will it?

And that.

Actually, I'm sure it's a virus. A piece of hilarity proved it: Using my Ubuntu CD, I saved the two vital documents (hand out and bibliography for tomorrow's presentation) on my MP3 player and went to the uni PC pool to finish them. Just when I was finished and had sent them to the lecturer, I got the same error message I got on my computer when it broke down... the only difference: The uni computer had a superior virus scanner, so I saw that it was trying to install a program. Yup, I caught a virus, didn't know about it, imported it to the uni pc pool, sent it to my lecturer, and, what perhaps pisses me off the most, it's on my MP3 player. I guess that means I can get a new one, and since I also used it as a USB stick, I lost a few files of medium importance.

Anyway, is trying a Windows repair worth a shot? Should I reinstall it? Other suggestions?

If you have your documents, etc saved someplace you are comfortable with, then I'd reinstall the OS.  I've had some luck with pulling the HDD and scanning with another computer's AV program, but it's always iffy.  I've never had much luck with Windows repair.

Others may have different suggestions, but I really do prefer a re-format after a virus.

The family's up early tomorrow to take my daughter off to the provincial volleyball championships.
First time for any of us at something like this — 140 teams. Looking forward to it.

Not being an avid Windows user so I don't say this with much conviction, but I do believe that the Windows repair disk is only good for corrupted/missing OS files - not necessarily for getting rid of a virus. When I get stuck, I tend to turn to the best tech website - How To Geek. And as you still have your Ubuntu live CD, they have a tip to get rid of a Windows virus by using it - Scan a Windows PC for Viruses from a Ubuntu Live CD

That would be my favoured course of action - but not everyone is comfortable doing that.

Hard to tell. I guess we won't know until the eventual pay-off is there. It also depends on how you define "pay off". If the reward is an interesting job on a permanent basis, I'll be more than happy.

I'll do that when I find the time for it. Hopefully on Saturday, but you never know.

I was at a major mansion today, owned by really rich people in the wealthiest region of Berlin. My mate was pissy, I told him, "you and me, we'll both have places like this, if we put our energy to this."

It's either that or stay where I'm at - Germany's most (in)famous ghetto.

The result of the AV referendum went to the No's. I still maintain that people just could not understand it because of the way it was explained. So it looks like we will have FPTP for some time now.

Yikes, and did it ever.

FPTP just isn't right, and it benefits only the Conservatives. Same as in Canada. I'm so frustrated by it that I am thinking of (and this isn't a joke) becoming an activist and dedicating my life to getting our vote system changed.

I'm going to network a little and see what others think, see if I can find some like-minded people elsewhere in the country. I think the way to attack this is to reform things at provincial level. In BC, they tried an AV-style system once and then people changed it back, so...

Yep, I think you are right.  Its a long hill ahead of you, but I think you can make it.  Hell, I can see you starting your own website/forum (post the link!).

"your phone isn't working?  I know this political organization you may be interested in joining..."  J/K
I'm sitting here, drinking my morning coffee, feet on the table, listening to Opeth's Watershed, surfing the intertubes and all of the sudden I think to myself: "I need someone to save me, someone to save me from myself..."

And off to the cd rack I go.

@Per, I have to mow today and my yard will be fucked cause the iPod playlist that is loaded for today is "Iron Maiden".  yeah, I'll have a headbanging mess of a yard!
