Well, happy Easter everyone.

It's a lovely sunny day in Trondheim (can you believe it), so once I finish my breakfast I''ll put oranges, chocolate and a thermos of coffee in my backpack and go for a long and nice walk in the nice weather.

Cheers!

Here some stats:
It was the warmest Easter ever measured in Holland: 25 degrees Celsius (previous record: 24,5 in 1949)!

Tourism records:
More than a million foreigners came to Holland, 200.000 more than last year. More than half a million Dutch went on a holiday in their own country, and spent 750 million euro. From the foreign tourists 65% were German, for the rest many Belgians, French, British, Spanish and Italian.

One of the bad parts in always looking for new music is that you sometimes overlook the classics. I just wanted to listen to 1812 by Chaikovsky, and I noticed that I don't have it! :(

The Royal Wedding. Which I thought was next year but is apparently like now.
But if there was a Royal Wedding, we would get an extra day off work. Oh wait, now I remember what that unsigned memo said.

Haha!  That one I can understand.  On Friday, the Insurance side closed, but the Bank was open... so I worked.

Normally we follow Bank holidays, but someone still needs to work if either side is open.  But floating holidays are nice!

It's being talked everywhere. Not that i care, but i wondered if the guys in the band would give any watching to this event ? they're on some holidays now, i wonder if any of them will turn on the tv to watch, "yes, dear" and "now i pronounce you" live coverage. I mean, are the British that fanatic about their royalty ??

That you don't get an extra day off? Do tell.
Exactly what Wasted said - everyone else has a bank holiday but not us.

How are the Brits here feeling about AV?
I'm pretty excited about this. The first referendum I have had in my voting life and a once in a lifetime chance to change our voting system. I'm 90% made up to vote Yes - but ask me that last week I was 80% No. It needs to change, but I'm not yet convinced AV is the answer.

AV is better than FPTP. I'm so frustrated with FPTP right now...

This post explains why AV is better:

What is AV?

A different manner of electing officials. Basically, what the UK, Canada, US, etc. use is called "First Past the Post", or properly, "Single Member Plurality". Whoever gets the most votes wins, even if that person has only, say, 35% of the vote in a 4 way race.

AV is better known as "Instant Runoff Voting". You rank all the candidates 1, 2, 3, etc. When the votes are counted, it looks like this:

A: 35%
B: 30%
C: 25%
D: 10%

Let's say you voted for D. Because D got the least votes, D is eliminated. Your vote then gets its second chance. This keeps happening until someone gets 50%+1.

It's a much fairer way to do democracy.

This afternoon, I spent some while on my doorstep talking to a couple of Lib-Dem local candidates and quite possibly they swayed me (or helped me on my way to say yes). I believe we need to change the voting system - but I would have preferred to be saying yes to STV.

I honestly don't care for STV. I mean, I'm glad to hear you're interested in a change. To me, STV adds a new level of complexity that isn't necessary. If you're going to continue with single riding representation.

Otherwise, STV simply IS IRV/AV.

Edit: I should note that in the UK, it might be logical to go to an STV system, but that would involve a lot of larger reforms - the removal of ridings, for instance, that won't have these sorts of difficulties with AV. AV is a more fair system, and it's a good leaping point to STV for the next generation.

I also have a difficulty with the "extra votes" thought of STV. Who determines what votes are extra is the question I don't care for...and I think that if you're going to have a STV-style vote, you might as well go right to PR.

In Canada, I support reforming the Senate to be a straight PR-based system, while using IRV in the local ridings.

That's why I support dual house reform. I like AMS, but not as much as I do what I said for Canada. Of course, it took several hundred years to get some changes in for the House of Lords in the UK.
