But I say that every time I watch the 6 Nations rugby tourney. Why? Sebastien Chabal looks pretty cool like that:

Looks quite badass, that guy! Speaking of athletes with a full beard: This is how you look after running around in Siberia mid-winter:

But the badass prize goes to former cross-country champion Juha Mieto from Finland:

Tried to watch the first episode of Star Trek with my dad today.

It was so bad it's not even funny. The only way you could like this is if you were like 7 when it came out, and it looked cool somehow. Everything about it is horrible.

Maybe I'll download and episode of TNG, to see if it got better.

Which first episode - The Cage, or Where No Man Has Gone Before?

Both are pilots and cheesy, but Star Trek is from the 60s, man. It's over 40 years old. Cut it some slack.

Niether of them, I'm talking about The Man Trap.

And you know, yeah, it's 40 years old. I came with the mindset that it's going to be so bad it's funny, and I'll like it. But no, it's not so bad it's good: It's so bad it's bad.

Yeah, then next few episodes were far better than the first one and the 'unshown pilot'.

Compared to all the other sci-fi on tv at the time (none?) it was great.  And, in classic sci-fi, its still really cool...  its like anything, you just hafta lean back and enjoy it.  If you want it to look like the new Star Trek film, you'll always be unimpressed.

With that, I dont think TNG really hit its stride until about season 3.

Yeah, The Man Trap is pretty rough. It gets better as it goes, and there's some classic concepts in some of these episodes. Make sure to put yourself in the mindset...1960s, man. Everything these people have - flip phones, lasers, computers that talk and do the work for you - it's not just revolutionary, it's unheard of! And remember it's the Cold War...hardcore. Less than a handful of years removed from the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I also tried going to a random episode (22, season 2). It also sucked, but was a bit funnier.

Maybe I'll just skip it all together and remain a Star Wars guy.

That was the alien that sucked salt?

There are some real gems among those episodes.  The Nazi planet, the Gangster planet, the Roman planet.  'Miri', the planet that looked like Earth.

Loved 'Balance of Terror', 'Shore Leave'... and the one from Loosey's avatar.

Is there some sort of storyline between the episodes? I'm willing to watch an episode of you suggestion.

Nah, that's the one where the guys from the future borrow the crew's body.

"Mirror Mirror" is also incredible. So is "Who Mourns For Adonis". Another favourite is "City on the Edge of Forever", which stands shoulder-to-shoulder with episodes of TNG like "Tapestry" "The Inner Light" and "Best of Both Worlds", as well as DS9's fantastic "In The Pale Moonlight" as one of the greatest episodes of any television show ever.

Not in TOS. It's very episodic. So is TNG and Voyager. DS9 has some very long storylines.

It doesn't work that way.

What do you like in science fiction? That way, I can find something more appropriate. PLEASE remember that Star Wars isn't science fiction, so just...toss out those expectations.

Yeah, I read something about SW being science "fantasy" or whatever.
If SW isn't science fiction then I don't really know science fiction.

How about something with some moral conflict? Let's see some depth.
