Hahahahahahahaha, excellent! I think there are better things in the Maiden canon. That's it. I wouldn't place much of the album as high as many others would here, that's all. So back to my burning.

Bravo Eddies Wingman - you get a praise for making me spit out my water :)

A shame they didn't play this live, I think it would be the best live song from the album. This song is still growing on me, and it probably should be in a higher position.

I was really enjoying reading this thread until you mentioned the live show

I don't see Maiden until next Monday in Cardiff and have been trying hard to avoid knowing the setlist for months.

Gotta stop reading.  Dammit.

(Re reply 24.    Deliberatley not mentioned the song again)

An update full of rockers!

32. Different World
This rocker is criminally underrated! Maidens album openers have been amazing for the past decade (I'm going to count Rainmaker instead of Wildest Dreams :p). This song, like the rest of them, features great riffing and an awesome solo. The lyrical topic is more social-based, different from the war-based lyrics in the rest of the album. Bruce is awesome once again, and the "Don't wanna be here, somewhere I'd rather be" is my favourite part vocally. He really lifts himself there. I love the solos on Maiden's short rockers aswell. If nothing else, you know the rockers from the reunion era are at least consistent :)

31. Mother of Mercy

I'm guessing this pick will be fairly controversial. Anyway, this was the first song that caught my attention from The Final Frontier. The intro (first 2 or so minutes) of this song are my favourite part, featuring some awesome vocal melodies that aren't repeated enough to get boring. The guitar work helps the mood, and eventually the song explodes into heaviness. The chorus is awesome, as is the guitar solo. The ending is another highlight, a pretty unusual Maiden ending with the vocals kind of building up to something then dying off. The lyrics are interesting and well-written too. This one plays out like a mini-Paschendale.
Would be nice to see live, even if I think other songs from the album do a better job live.

30. The Number of the Beast
Into the top 30 we go, with one of Maiden's most iconic tracks. As soon as the guitar intro comes in, you know you are in for something special. That tune just seems to lift you up, it has such a magical feeling to it. Bruce's vocals are incredible here, conveying a sense of mysticism and power. The lyrics aren't great, but they can be easily ignored in this song, and I don't feel it lets down the song very much. The two solos are awesome, and the ending is actually pretty similar to Mother of Mercy, but it has more of a feeling of gradually building down. This one has been a live staple since 1982, and for good reason.
It works fantastically live, and always gets the crowd going for an encore.

13. Fear of the Dark
This album is better than No Prayer because it has a couple more good songs. However, the falls are worse than No Prayer in my opinion, so even though it just edges over, it has far more good tracks (Childhood's End, Judas Be My Guide, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Be Quick or Be Dead, Wasting Love, Fear of the Dark). Bruce continues in his raspy style, which doesn't do nearly as much for me.

Agree 100%, especially on the chorus bit. This song gets lost imho with all of the other brilliance on AMOLAD (and yes, I'm one of those who thinks Out of the Shadows is way higher than 101st), but I think is one of the best things Maiden has done since the reunion. Accessible for all but virtuoso for some, one of my favs.

I fully agree about FOTD. It's an underrated album.

Definitely not up there with some better albums, but on it's own - it's really good.

Hmmmm...Mother of Mercy a "Mini Paschendale"...Brilliant!  What a great comparison.  MoM is incredibly over looked on a loaded album, Final Frontier.  It is an awesome  'AMOLAD overflow' sounding rocker.  Great selection in the top 30-area of this list.
Cannot argue with the great #OTB and I also like the different world shocker pick.  Maybe not THIS high on my list, but an awesome opener that grabs the listener and gets the A Matter of Life and Death journey off with a bang.

Even when our rankings don't match, your take on the songs is almost always the same as mine, particularly on Different World (34 for me)
Beast enjoyed a huge renaissance for me when I set my rankings in the daily song thread. It's always been a top 30 song, but it leapt to 10th this time.
But just when things threatened to get monotonous, you threw in Mother of Mercy. The first two minutes are wonderful. The chorus (in Maiden terms) sucks.
It's meant to be heartfelt but it's sounds forced, and Bruce is strained. It spoils what could have been a great song and the rest just kind of tails off. I ranked it 79th, mostly because the first bit is so good.
And thanks for this. Good read.

No problem, nice to see well-thought out comments, they are interesting to read :)

Hopefully I inspire some others to do a countdown once I'm finished.

Wow, someone thinks the chorus of Mother of mercy sucks? [in Maiden terms]  Wow.  That chorus is freakin' hardcore I think.  Bruce tears it up and the guitar riff in the back is insane.  That chorus sticks with me all day every time I hear it.  This list does really show the different tastes in the Maiden community.

Its not amazing in my opinion, one of the weaker parts of the song, but its still pretty good.

Different World : 121st (what a huge difference)
Mother of Mercy : 43rd
The Number of the Beast : 32nd

Alright I'm going to attempt a top ten.

1: Paschendale
1: Isle of Avalon
1: Sign of the Cross
4: Alexander the Great
5: Starblind
6: Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
7: Moonchild
8: Flash Of The Blade
9: Revelations
10: Ghost of The Navigator

That was the hardest thing I've ever done. Those who can do a whole top 50 amaze me. Good job!

Well, it took me about a month, sometimes when I was bored and just listening to music I would attempt to add a few songs to the rankings. I was constantly switching them around until I finally found a satisfactory list :)

Since I've been doing my marathon (listening to every one of my cd's) I think I might rank my all time top 50. I think I might wait until the new DT album has been out for awhile and the hype has gone so my list isn't too DT heavy.

I have a 145 song list

My Top 15 at the moment :

1. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
2. Hallowed Be Thy Name
3. Starblind
4. Powerslave
5. Phantom of the Opera
6. Paschendale
7. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
8. Infinite Dreams
9. Caught Somewhere in Time
10. Alexander the Great
11. Stranger in a Strange Land
12. Sign of the Cross
13. Children of the Damned
14. Dance of Death
15. To Tame a Land

Well I just compiled 55 of my favorite songs from the CD's I've listened to so far. And I'm not even halfway done.
