Judas Priest

You're right that the same bands can't headline every year, but Judas Priest simply aren't big enough to headline Download Festival anymore. I repeat: last year they headlined Bloodstock Festival which has a capacity of maybe up to 18,000 and it didn't sell out. Download's capacity is maybe 110,000. Judas Priest don't even play in small arenas in the UK. They play in medium-to-large theatres. Their last headline show in London was at Brixton Academy (capacity 4,900) which I think @Brigantium attended. Def Leppard headlined the 20,000 capacity O2 Arena in December. Legacy isn't relevant for headlining festivals. Saxon also have a great legacy but are now a pretty insignificant band.
Not me, sorry. @Black Abyss Babe maybe? I saw Priest headline a modestly sized venue in Bradford in about 2014/15.

Well he already play Painkiller's both solos, so maybe yes.

But the next year is their 50th Anniversary Tour - they cannot play the Firepower tour from the previous year.

I think they will play a 50th Anniversary Tour set, but it will be a 70 minute set, instead of 100+ minutes because they're opening for Ozzy and not co-headlining.

@The_7th_one Judas Priest really aren't that big in the UK now. Last year they headlined Bloodstock Festival which has a capacity of maybe up to 18,000 and it didn't sell out. The last time they tried to play in arenas the tickets weren't exactly flying off the shelf.

The 2009 UK arena tour was an absolute flop and they even had to cancel one date.

They headlined Download in 2008 but haven't maintained their profile well since then and have receded instead.

No they didn't. They were special guests; Kiss headlined. ;)

Def Leppard, Slipknot and Tool are significantly bigger bands than Judas Priest.

Definitely. Judas Priest cannot headline in the UK a festival the size of Download.

Honestly if Priest went on tour with either 1 band as co-headling with both doing an hour and a half or 2 bands with one doing 45, another 60 and Priest closing it out with a 90 minute I think they could sell out arenas nicely. If UFO had said yes to opening then I think the tour would have been amazing

Yeah I saw them at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton back in 2015, and that has a capacity of about 2,000. And that's in their home turf of the Black Country, and even then it didn't sell out.

Priest does worse on their hometurf compared to other countries.

Maybe a popular new album is, then.
Does anybody know how much people were on the Priest concert in Poland on 3rd August 2018 - I am curious to know, that's quite an audience  ..... https://twitter.com/judaspriest/status/1029291594153951232

Richie Faulkner has heard rumours of up to around 250,000 -> https://www.instagram.com/p/BmCZRiTl5j0/?hl=bg&taken-by=falconfaulkner
(and the expected attendance of the whole festival to be around 900,000)

Holy cow. That's huge! Maiden have probably never played such a number on the European continent. This was on August the 3rd, Pol'and' Rock Festival (Kostrzyn, Poland). // Faulkner wrote: With attendance expected to be around 900,000 over the whole festival, we heard rumours of up to around 250,000 #metalmaniacs out there tonight for the Priest at #Poland @polandrockfestival .No official numbers yet but there were maniacs as far as the eye could see. Definitely my biggest gig ever. Thanks to our polish #priestfamily for a night I know I’ll never forget. RHRF DOTF #judaspriest #firepower #firepowertour2018 #metalgods #heavymetal
