Ok, I was sifting through the mass of classic rock songs on my computer and was playing a bit of everything, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Metallica, Maiden (of course!), Van Halen, even Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac.

Anyways, the playlist I concocted went from Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls, Ride The Lightning, Seek And Destroy, and Sad But True to Iron Maiden's Aces High, Brave New World, Fear Of The Dark, and Journeyman.

I got to thinking about it, and both bands are considered heavy metal, and in Metallica's case, there is no doubt why, but to me Maiden just doesn't sound like heavy metal, to me they sound more like synthesized classic rock, which is good cause I prefer Arena Rock to Heavy Metal anyday, is there some firm ground to my thoughts, or am I just crazy?

First of all, Metallica is considered Thrash Metal. Second, who cares?

[!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/mad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'mad.gif\' /][!--endemo--] So Iron Maiden arent heavy metal. i had many arguments in the late eighties with people who had the same view as you and i'm as adamant now as i was then. iron Maiden IS metal. Iron Maiden took a new and exicting sound coming out of the pubs and clubs of England in the late seventies and rebranded for themselves. In every era they have gone out and proudly stood for what they believe in, true music played with integrity, passion and skill. Theyv'e never been trendy - they took on the punk rock scene in the seventies, the new romantics in the eighties, god they were even having top ten singles when Kylie and Jason were around. They've lasted when other bands either broke up, got high on drugs or made soft rock ballads for films like Armagheddon. And now in the new millenium when rock music is once again atop the pile, they continue with sell out headline tours. What makes Maiden different from Metallica and such is their diversity and range - from Purgatory to Children of the Damned, from Paschendale to Blood Brothers. MAIDEN IS METAL. Ok i'm gonna get off my high horse and take a lie down. See ya

Excellent post, thegodthatish!

So, is Iron Maiden metal? Yes, most definately. To prove my point, I shall use science.

A metal is described as "any of various opaque, fusible, ductile, and typically lustrous substances that are good conductors of electricity and heat, form cations by loss of electrons, and yield basic oxides and hydroxides; especially : one that is a chemical element as distinguished from an alloy." (Merriam-Webster English Dictionary)

Here's some basic information on iron:
Periodic Symbol - Fe
Atomic number - 26
Density - 7.86 g/ml
Atomic weight - 55.847
Melting point - 1809 K
Bonding radius - 1.17
Boiling point - 3135 K
Atomic radius - 1.72
Heat of vaporization - 349.6 kJ/mol
Ionization Potential - 7.87 V
Heat of fusion - 13.8 kJ/mol
Electronegativity - 1.83
Specific heat - 0.44 J/gK

Iron, then, fits the description of a metal. Therefore, Iron Maiden, is metal.

Nuff said. Science prooves the point. I've just read a previous post by iron Sauron who confesses to have been listening to Maiden for only four months. Here is some advice. Take a week off work, study, school whatever. Spend that time listening to Maiden none stop until your ears start bleeding. Then make a new post with a humble apology stating your acceptance that (IRON) Maiden and Metal are both described as each other in the Collins Concise Oxford Dictionary

Metallica can fuck off. Iron Maiden are one of the most influencial, hardest rocking METAL bands ever.
And....why would you put so much Metallica on the same playlist? Thats worse than having the Tesco logo tattooed on your forehead. Surely you have ear-muffs, IronSauron-san?

Now, this wasn't really nice. Remember that Metallica have come up with some of the best Metal tunes of the 80s. Let's be fair to the fallen ones and stop kicking them when they're on the ground.

Woah woah woah, I never said they're weren't metal! I was asking if that's really what they were, due to their sound being so different from pretty much every metal act out there.

Like I said, I like their unique sound because it is different from the overly distorted power chords of Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer (eeeww).

Maiden has better vocals, better solos, far better basslines and drum parts tot heir song than the other bands of "metal".

However, thanks for clearing that up and proving that they are metal.

edit: And sadly, yes, I like some of Metallica's material. But theres a reason I have 18 Metallica songs and 68 Iron Maiden...

Metallica was cool before they put the money before the music.

Unlike Maiden, when Metallica became so popular that they could be considered 'mainstream' they forgot who put them tere - the fans!

In Bruce's own words: "The reason we're on this stage tonight...is not because we're fucking clever, it's 'cuz YOU put us here!"

Maiden respects their fans and plays for them, not for their own wallets. Metallica lost that objectivity somewhere along the way

I like Bruces rants when he says this about Metallica, about money and this napster thing..I loved Metallica before, but have lost much respect for them now. Seen "Some Kind of Monster". Lars Ulrich sounds like a little girl with all his complaining [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
I like Kirks solos though...

Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer are all thrash bands. Thrash, by definition, has a harder sound than heavy metal. Probably the best bands to compare Maiden to are other NWOBHM bands, like Samson and Saxon. Bands that didn't make it as big as Maiden has.

Also, compare Maiden to JP. There's a definite similarity, although Maiden's sound has evolved beyond it.

Now listen to Power Metal bands like Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Hammerfall, Helloween, and you can see how their sound evolves from the "heavy" sound of Maiden. Thrash, remember, is always going to sound harder than heavy metal...because it is harder than heavy metal.

Thanks, I honestly didn't realise how diverse the term "metal" has become int eh music world.

I only ever really knew of two: Heavy Metal and Death Metal

You're right, let them rise again so when you hit them, they'll fall [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Death metal, black metal, prog metal, heavy metal, speed metal, thrash metal, power metal, theatrical metal, glam metal...

I think when you compare Metallica to Iron Maiden you have to realize...they grew up in different areas. What influenced Metallica is far different from what influenced Maiden. They're both pioneers of the metal genre, and different types of metal spawned from their lead. Bands like Pantera and the likes more than likely were inspired by Metallica, whereas bands like Kamelot, Stratovarius, etc. have a more Maiden-ish sound to them, while still making their own.

I tend to just listen to all of it & appreciate them all for what they are: musicians.

... AOR metal, blues metal, doom metal, funk/rap metal, gothic metal, industrial metal, sleaze metal, stoner metal...

The list goes on really.

...Celtic Metal, Love Metal, Symphonic Metal, Atmospheric Symphonic Death Metal, Funeral Doom Metal, True Metal, Brutal Death Metal, Shred Metal...

(The more I read the word "Metal", the more stupid it looks to me)

I even discovered Farmer Metal, or Tractor Metal, when I saw that band opening for Di'Anno in Switzerland! [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

The way I see it is labels are for soup and cereal, whatever you call it is fine, I just know it is the best music ever!

I would like to offer an apology to Metallica. Its really just Lars I dont like.

I do admit I love some Metallica but they have gone too commercial.
