Iron Maiden's worst song (AKA the Head to Head results thread)

Well, if I had my way, CSIT would've already shown up and AMOLAD would be the highest ranked album. :p Even though my favorite albums are SSOASS and BNW. I just personally see AMOLAD as having the most high quality songs. Not knocking SIT, as I actually prefer SIT to AMOLAD, but AMOLAD is just such a monster. Every song is at least 9/10. The only reason I prefer other albums to it is I prefer their atmosphere.

I'm quite pleased with how TMWWBK, The Edge of Darkness, and Running Free finished. I expected them to be in the bottom 20, to be honest. I think I would rank them maybe slightly higher, but I'm fine with how they finished just because they surpassed my expectations. Particularly Running Free, a song that I could've sworn lost every round (my memory clearly hyperbolized that... or I just didn't like at the polls after I voted).

I'm disappointed that Mother Russia is finishing in third place from its respective album. Actually, I find it scary. Mother Russia is up there with Maiden's best epics. I quite like the rest of No Prayer, but Mother Russia is just so much better than the rest of the album. I'm glad the title track is finishing in the top half, though. It's probably leaving next round, though. I doubt it went far.

I would've liked to see Be Quick or Be Dead finish higher as it's one of the best '90s songs, but after seeing the Fear of the Dark trend, I can't say I'm shocked. I'm not sure why it's not more well-liked, but oh well.

Even though I knew it would finish low, I will never, ever understand why The Nomad isn't a fan favorite. I know the midsection is kind of "lifted" from another song, but if Hallowed can lift lyrics, I think Nomad should be allowed to lift a melody. :p It's just such a cool tune. I personally prefer it to Powerslave (blasphemy!).
 
A lot of you guys really dislike 'Run to the Hills', but I bet if it wasn't so popular then opinions would be different. It is overplayed, yes, but I still think it's a great song.
 
I've always found RTTH's chorus annoying. It's the HCW of the album for me -- a song with excellent verses, but the chorus is so awful that I cannot get past it.

It's not a creative song at all, a pretty basic one. Guitar melodies aren't special, bass playing and vocals are great. They're not enough to make it a great song in my case though.

I don't really count overplayedness in when I'm judging the songs.

Huh??!!! Like mckindog, this really jumped out at me. It's one of my five favorite post-reunion songs, and better than anything on Final Frontier, IMO. Obviously, tastes differ, but it simply defies reason that anyone with normal-functioning human ears could consider it worse than than 134 other Iron Maiden songs -- including The Apparition and Hooks in You, among others. I think you may want to give this one another chance, Foro.

See that same post for the current standing. Still a stable top 3, but I expect Powerslave to creep in sooner or later (Rime and Powerslave might take care of that but I'm still not 100% sure).

A Matter of Life and Death has also moved up. Beast, TFF and Brave New World have dropped. No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark will probably stay at the bottom, but Fear still has two epic songs which will probably lift it from the last spot. I am curious about the popularity of the remaining songs from VXI and TXF, because this could become a close match.

Most remarkable in my opinion: Right now, the difference in popularity between Killers (no. 10) and Dance of Death (no. 11) is huge. At this point it looks like Maiden(fans) have 5 very unpopular albums (the nineties era + DOD) instead of 4, but we shall see how much certain songs called Paschendale and Dance of Death will change that.

That doesn't matter. Do you really judge the quality of a song by how complicated it is? Personally I would rather listen to Sepultura than Mozart, despite Mozart being a far better musician than Andreas Kisser.
 
RTTH? It has a jollier tone than most other songs from that time, and that aspect alone makes it less exciting for me. It has been given too much attention and praise. Certainly the most boring song from the "overexposed" group. This (relatively speaking!) childish sounding song belongs at the bottom 20.

By the way, coming back to my least favourite 14 songs. All but one did not make it Maiden's best half. Muhaha.
I wonder when The Talisman will (finally) pop up. *evil grin*

On the other hand, from my favourite 14, The Unbeliever & Mother Russia did not make it in the best half either. *laughs like a farmer with a toothache*
 
The good news is I am enjoying the sand and sun of the Salish Sea.
The bad news is I am away from my computer and wont be able to do an update until Friday.

Epic Maiden is...epic, but this forum generally underrates the bands great rockers - a group that may or may not include songs like Run to the Hills and Running Free.

Wow... I am surprised that this one is buried so low.
For me, this song really captures the classic Maiden vibe in the reunion era.

If you take away the thick Kevin Shirley production,
the song itself would sit comfortably on either of the Piece of Mind or Powerslave albums.
 
The rankings from #110 down to around #25 or so
will probably appear to be almost a complete crapshoot.

I can't imagine that any one person's taste will agree with
a majority of the overall order in this segment of the list.

I'd still put the 80's Iron Maiden over the reunion albums. The rockers are awesome. That said, I don't like Run to the Hills. Not because it's overplayed, it just doesn't do anything for me. Other overplayed songs, Number of the Beast, The Trooper...I love those.

I never said that I judge songs solely based on complexity. Where did you get that from ? Also, yeah. It DOES matter. For me, at least. I simply hate basicness. I like searching and finding out aspects in music.

If I am going to like a basic song, it has to have an incredibly powerful atmosphere, which is the other thing I care about most in music. And RTTH doesn't have that.
