3 votes for The Longest Day is shameful. It's a bit of a sequel to Pascendale and it's pretty close in quality to it too.

The beginning and the couplets are nice but the chorus is not that great, and also quite repetitive.

Lord of Light! Now here we have a beauty.

Well, I also go for Different World, Longest Day and Out of the Shadows.

I understand Different World (I just really love that song) but I don't see how The Longest Day could possibly considered weaker than other songs on there.

But maybe I'm just stubborn and like that song for a different reason... :P
I don't understand either choice :P Different World is as good as an opener as Maiden have done (with the exception of the 'never-should've-been-an-opener' SotC)

And I completely disagree. I love the chorus, especially the "Sliding we go" part (or is that the Bridge? Musical terminology confusing me again!)

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

All right! The final album chapter and then off to the final round! In retrospect, I'm sorry I voted to keep Afraid to Shoot Strangers instead of Sign of the Cross, I bet SOTC would have survived the previous round.

Phantom, Pilgrim, Benjamin Breeg.

I thought the song was brilliant, but everyone prefers The Wicker Man, so I kinda figured it would be among the first to get the boot. I thought The Pilgrim would leave us with Different World. Shows what I know. :P

That's the bridge. Fantastic bridge. Yes, the chorus is the downside of the whole song, but I really don't find choruses all that important. If they were, I wouldn't consider The Evil That Men Do as brilliant as I do.(: It's the song as a whole I judge.(:

Anyhow, back on topic!

Also Adrian Smith rates the song, so it has to be awesome :P

Mhmm.

But if The Longest Day goes this round, it'll make voting so much easier.

Listening to the song right now, and I completely agree with H. The lyrics paint the bloody beach right before my eyes, it's like watching Saving Private Ryan.

Yes, the chorus is repetitive. Hadn't it been for the chorus, this could be top 10 material, easily, and the greatest song of the album.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

I don't find the solo parts that memorable either. Those chord changes sound kinda familiar.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

If "familiar chord changes" should disqualify songs from being great,we could throw a lot in the "bin of mediocrity". As I see it, the chord progressions don't need to stand out if what's on top of them sounds good. Of course, a new and different chord progression that a band have not used much can sound refreshing. The lack of such innovation does not make a song boring.

Just to take one of your favourite songs as an example: The last half of Afraid To Shoot Strangers contains only well-proven chord progressions, played to death before. Still, the song is great, because that old, well-tested formula is used well. I think the same goes for The Longest Day. Besides, the guitar solos themselves are nice.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

Hmm I should have said that the music underneath the solos, reminds me of one other song, but I can't think which one at the moment.

I don't have that when listening to AtSS.

The chords aren't important really during a solo.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

Not to you, you mean. I am always interested in everything that is played.

It would be quite different if there'd be a solo with only drums under it, not? The rest of the music is the oil in the machine.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

Aces High
Ghost of the Navigator
Brave New World

Come one people! Out of the Shadows is so beautiful...

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor: AMOLAD round 1 (Nov 23-25)

I'm surprised that so many are voting for the 'Longest Day'.  The chorus is looong but otherwise the song is great in its musical imagery.

I agree 100%, like Bruce himself said ''I wanted the words to sound like the action'' (or something like that). From the agressive and (almost) raspy verses to the epic bridge before the (unfortunately) boring main chorus itself. It wouldn't be so bad, but they repeat the same line for like eight times or something.
